The Rogerian Theory and Its Applications

The Rogerian argument posits many advantages to an Aristotelian discussion. Individuals are likely to become defensive when others confront them. In this way, the Rogerian approach tries to defuse a tense situation and connect these factions rather than seek domination of one over the other (Quinn, 2015). It involves establishing factual information and recognizing the merits of another’s argument. It is improbable that one’s view is completely flawed. While our position may involve a better stance, improving it with feedback from others would help develop a stronger argument. The Rogerian approach provides a new way for people to communicate and avoid feelings of resentment (Quinn, 2015). This leads to discoveries and prevents people from becoming defensive, enabling fruitful discussion. It is also important to consider that each argument could be merged into one if both present various merits. The Rogerian approach also allows individuals to recognize the errors on their side in a matter. It forms a new argument and seeks to provide an understanding of issues rather than fighting a particular position. This enables each person in the discussion to feel free and give input in a way they would not if they were in a defensive mood (Quinn, 2015). In this way, Rogerian communication provides the best alternative for use in a situation that requires an individual to speak with someone whose actions directly affect others. However, input is needed to conduct a certain task.

I believe employing Rogerian theory in writing is prudent because it provides a new way to prove issues. An individual does not focus on the merits of their argument and provides a well-rounded answer to any question posited. In this way, using the Rogerian approach would enable a person to avoid issues related to bias, as many individuals perceive others to favor their position over others when writing. The Rogerian theory provides a chance to develop a discussion rather than argue against other people. It enables the writer to gain more information while determining if their position is the best based on its merits and demerits. Employing the Rogerian theory reduces the chance that an individual’s writing may be called into question as they have provided both the advantages and disadvantages of their position; therefore, individuals that seek to discredit this information would view the order as overarching and presenting every side possible and choosing the best among them to follow.
