Responsibilities of the Nurse Educator in Supporting Struggling Students
The nurse educator’s responsibility in assisting the student is vital to help them struggling in education. It is essential to state that the educator acts as a guideline for a student and should communicate with them closely. In the book Teaching in Nursing by Billings and Halstead (2019), the authors stress that honest and constant communication between educators and students is vital to allow the second to achieve academic results (Billings & Halstead, 2019).
Moreover, the educator must establish understandable goals and learning objectives to help the student realize the purpose of learning. It will be challenging to avoid struggling with academic tasks without this understanding. As Billings & Halstead (2019) state, “mutual trust and respect have been identified as the basis for an effective relationship between the instructor and the student” (p. 40). Consequently, the educator’s primary responsibility is to create an atmosphere of mutual understanding to help the student increase their motivation and explain the beliefs and values of the learning process.
Adherence to Ethical and Legal Standards in Evaluation
There are two ways the educator can adhere to ethical and legal standards for evaluating the student. On the one hand, substantive due process assumes the necessity of appropriate punishment (Billings & Halstead, 2019). In other words, if the student has failed, it is vital for the educator not to be prejudiced and to evaluate the student rationally.
On the other hand, procedural due process requires educators to hear the students and communicate with them constantly to solve problems (Billings & Halstead, 2019). It means that the teacher should allow students to express their point of view even if, from an academic perspective, they are failing. In addition, regarding legal standards, the educator should remember that every student has a right to appeal (Billings & Halstead, 2019). The factors mentioned above highlight that the relationships between the educator and the student during the educational process should be based on equal rights and mutual understanding.
Valued Feedback and Evaluation Experiences as a Nursing Student
Concerning feedback and evaluation in my career as a nursing student, the most valuable thing for me is the educator’s ability to hear different points of view. In other words, when the teacher does not follow the learning plan and evaluates students only by strict academic frames, it allows students to express their opinions and feelings freely. This opportunity is crucial for students’ development as personalities and understanding their purpose as nurses. In addition, when the educator sincerely participates in discussions with students and gives them feedback, it creates a friendly atmosphere.
Summary of an Academic Performance Article
In the article White Paper on Inclusion of Students with Disabilities by Marks and Ailey (2014), the authors consider the peculiarities regarding students with disabilities in nursing education. Notably, the three main sections of the article are devoted to this problem. Among them are researching issues concerning the prevention of entering applicants with disabilities in nursing, possible changes to engage more people with disabilities, and researching various barriers (Marks & Ailey, 2014).
While considering this article, particular attention should be paid to exploring possible standards regarding obstacles and support for students with disabilities. For example, the authors consider technical standards, essential functions, and historical context (Marks & Ailey, 2014). At the end of the article, current technical standards and possible changes are explored. Remarkably, the authors conclude that there are many issues regarding how schools implement those to help students with disabilities adapt to learning processes.
