Traditions of Pompano Beach Families: Dramatic Play Center Items

The discussion led to the introduction of multiple ideas regarding the selection of culturally appropriate dramatic play center items to represent the diverse cultures and traditions of Pompano Beach families. According to Data USA (2021), the three largest ethnic groups in Pompano Beach are non-Hispanic Whites (Americans, Italian Americans, etc.), African-American people, and White Hispanics. The families of White Hispanic citizens can originate from Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, or other countries (Data USA, 2021). The group argued for choosing the clothes for the three large groups, with each set representing the styles understood by all cultures in the group. It would include traditional African necklaces and garments for boys and girls, huaraches, sombreros, Mexican skirts, huipils, and North American clothing attributes, such as cowboy hats. Some of the prevailing occupations in the city are sales and related jobs, administrative support, food preparation and serving, healthcare, and building and maintenance positions (Data USA, 2021). Thus, the group proposed official jackets for children, doctor and nurse costumes, chef and waiter/waitress costumes, and builder costumes. Play food and utensil selection ideas are mainly based on what all Pompano Beach cultures have in common and the most popular occupations. The group highlighted the importance of focusing on healthier foods valued by any ethnicity in Pompano Beach, such as fruits and vegetables. Notable, any meat apart from toy chicken legs were excluded to consider Muslim and Hindu families’ lifestyles. The recommended utensils and other equipment items match the abovementioned occupations and include common everyday kitchen utensils used by any family, such as kettles, cups, plates, and spoons. Finally, for games associated with professions, the proposed utensils and accessories are cutting boards, mixing bowls, trays, shop scales, toy laptops, doctor kits, building blocks, and toy construction tools.
