Introduction
In the modern world, in the political, economic, social, and cultural contexts, change is constant. Humans simply do not notice some of them; however, numerous have a scale of global, interethnic catastrophes that cause fear for the present and the future. Each person has different adaptation mechanisms: some take longer to accept the new reality, and some accept it faster. Nevertheless, to cope with today’s challenges, society needs transformational leaders who can work effectively in the face of uncertainty and manage change.
Transformative leaders can quickly accept the new reality, see new opportunities in it, and open them up for themselves, their business, and their teams (O’Reilly & Chatman, 2020). In this reflective essay, I explore the concept of transformative leadership. This management theory has profoundly resonated with me due to its focus on empowerment, inspiration, and the promotion of positive change within organizations. Through introspection and crucial examination of personal experiences, I aim to clarify the deep impact of transformative leadership and its implications for organizational dynamics.
Transformative Leadership
Transformative leadership, as conceptualized by James MacGregor Burns and further extended by Bernard M. Bass, transcends traditional managerial practices by prioritizing imagination, inspiration, and the development of followers’ prospects. This leadership style seeks to elevate individuals and institutions by igniting a shared sense of purpose, encouraging innovation, and fostering collective growth and development (Kotamena et al., 2020). A leader needs to continually change himself, modify his approach to management, and encourage the whole team to change by his example. It is what transformational leaders are capable of (Asbari, 2020).
Even though the concept of transformational supervision is about 50 years old, there has recently been an increase in research in this area. As researchers note, transformational leadership has become a priority topic in management research over the last 20 years (Schiuma et al., 2022). Rapid change is an organization’s strategic objective in a global economic environment. For quick transformation, a company must have a culture of innovation and high performance. I firmly believe that it is the result that companies with developed transformational leadership can achieve.
My interest in transformative leadership arises from personal encounters with leaders who exemplify its principles and have encouraged me to aspire for more influential contributions within my professional sphere. These leaders maintain a unique ability to articulate a clear vision, rally support, and designate individuals to exceed their perceived limitations (Shields & Hesbol, 2020). Their transformative influence extends beyond organizational success to encompass personal growth, fulfillment, and a sense of purpose.
One particular example that encapsulates the nature of transformative leadership occurred during my tenure at a nonprofit organization. Our executive director, a visionary leader deeply determined for our mission, galvanized our team through her unwavering dedication, empathy, and creative outlook. Under her direction, we embarked on ambitious initiatives, tackled tough challenges, and achieved outstanding outcomes that exceeded expectations. Her transformative leadership style developed a culture of trust, collaboration, and innovation, propelling our organization to new heights of excellence.
Personal Experience
Reflecting on this experience, I recognize the deep influence of transformative leadership in shaping organizational culture, driving invention, and fostering employee concentration and satisfaction. Through their visionary leadership, transformative leaders motivate individuals to transcend self-interest and work towards a higher collective purpose (Strasser et al., 2019). This transformative effect extends beyond the workplace, permeating every aspect of organizational life and promoting a sense of belonging, dignity, and shared ownership of organizational goals.
Moreover, transformative leadership holds profound importance for personal growth and development (Reza, 2019). As a follower of transformative leaders, I have been encouraged to embrace challenges, seize growth opportunities, and cultivate a continuous-improvement mindset. Their mentorship and guidance have instilled in me a deep-seated belief in my potential to effect positive change and make noteworthy contributions to the organizations and communities I serve.
Benefits
Transformational leadership has numerous benefits, of which two are key for me. The first advantage of transformational leadership is that it promotes a culture of innovation. Several authors point out that transformational leadership plays a critical role in generating innovation and creating a climate that supports the creation of capabilities and practices for such generations (Top et al., 2020). In an environment of constant change and difficult challenges, organizations must adapt to change faster than ever before.
This management demands a greater willingness to absorb the most promising practices and knowledge from both internal and external environments. Transformational leaders play an essential role in these processes by improving the organization’s ability to absorb, assimilate, and apply knowledge (Budur, 2020). They provide data, assign responsibility, and facilitate the development of competencies for all organizational stakeholders, who then use these competencies to reduce internal barriers. Since transformational leadership, by its very nature, involves the active development of organizational learning, it is a key factor in the success of businesses in an economy based on intellectual capital.
The second advantage of transformational leadership is that it fosters a culture of high performance. Scholars attribute the high effectiveness of transformational leadership to its ability to increase motivation, boost morale, foster team building, and increase subordinates’ responsibility, awareness, and creativity (Shields, 2020). Transformational leaders bear the responsibility for managing change. Moreover, perhaps it is time to share this responsibility more actively with the team and followers, building the spirit of transformational leadership in each of them. It requires a serious restructuring of the leadership culture in companies – a transition from vertical to horizontal leadership – and comprehensive training of followers.
Conclusion
In conclusion, my exploration of transformative leadership has heightened my appreciation for its transformative potential and reaffirmed its relevance in contemporary organizational contexts. Through visionary leadership, empowerment, and a commitment to fostering positive change, transformative leaders can elevate individuals, organizations, and society. As I continue my professional journey, I am motivated to incorporate the principles of transformative leadership and contribute to creating a more inclusive, innovative, and impactful world. I am committed to developing my leadership skills, honing my ability to motivate and empower others, and advocating for positive change within my spheres of influence. By embracing the transformative potential of leadership, I aspire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals, organizations, and communities, contributing to a more colorful and prosperous future for all.
