“Troy”: Film Analysis From the Point of View of Organizational Behavior

The field of organizational behavior analysis is rapidly growing. A critical assessment of the OB present state is widely depicted in various academic journals. They show significant results in the behavior science. There are many psychological factors influencing behavior, such as learning, motivation and perception.

In the current work for a film analysis, from the point of view of organizational behavior, among the possible variants, the film “Troy” is chosen. The choice is stopped on this movie because the main plot of the picture is the war in which large armies of enemies are involved. The army is a multi-stage organization and is an excellent object for analyzing organizational behavior. For the analysis support two articles are used in work, namely: “Organizational Leadership: A conceptual analysis.” by Surya (2015) and “Work motivation and organizational commitment among Iranian employees” by Alimohammadi & Neyshabor (2013).

Topic selection

The leadership theory of organizational behavior is analyzed in the work of Surya S. “Organizational Leadership: A conceptual analysis.” is clearly expressed in the behavior of the characters in the movie Troy. As an example and object of analysis of leadership, an organizational group of soldiers subordinate to Achilles can be taken.

The motivation theory of organizational behavior is depicted in the work of Alimohammadi & Neyshabor (2013) “Work motivation and organizational commitment among Iranian employees.” The researchers demonstrate the importance of motivation in organizational behavior. Personal motivation is the basis of effective leadership. Absence or wrong motivation can nullify all the efforts made to achieve the goal. As an example of motivation in the movie, Achilles’ desire to conquer Troy can be taken.

Surya (2015), states that leadership goes far back to the history. It is observed even in ancient Egypt and Greece. Leadership presupposes the influence of one person, the leader, on a group of individuals for the achievement of a needed goal. The effect of the influence depends not only on the leader’s personality but leadership style, environment and motivation. The article numbers several types of leadership style: authoritarian, paternalistic, democratic and laissez-faire (Surya, 2015, p. 1798).

Academic research

The film presents two types of leadership: authoritarian and paternalistic. Menelaus, King of Sparta, conducts authoritarian leadership. For this type of leader, the human life and someone else’s opinion does not matter. The opinion of the leader is the only truth and is beyond of any doubt. All orders must be fulfilled rigorously and promptly. This style results in fear, given out as respect, hatred, and willingness to betray at any time. The units of the organization, the courtiers, and the military do not have a personal interest in achieving the goals set by Menelaus. They are motivated only by fear. Even his wife, Queen Helen, leaves and disgraces the King. Thus, we can talk about the wrong management of the leadership of the of Sparta’s leader.

The second, paternalistic leadership style is presented by another character, Achilles. Soldiers are his family, for which he is responsible. Achilles requires complete obedience but always goes into battle with his army, giving them an example of courage and fortitude. He knows everyone by name and values every warrior as his brother. As a result, such a leader is loved and respected. Everyone is ready to give his life in battle next to Achilles. He is a real authority with unlimited trust. The strength of his organization is in the unity and commonality of achieving goals.

Alimohammadi & Neyshabor (2013) show the importance of personal motivation as a substantial factor in goal achievement and a good result. Good motivation forces a person to apply the maximum amount of possible efforts to solve the problem facing the organization. There is a strong personal interest as the engine of the main process. So in the movie, Achilles’ personal motivation for conquering the Troy is not the fulfillment of Menelaus’ orders, but the desire to leave an indelible imprint in history, as the sole conqueror of the unconquerable Troy. The motivation of the Achilles’ soldiers is a great honor to fall in battle alongside Achilles, thereby showing him their respect.

From my point of view, the made learning by movie analysis with the help of quality academic articles confirms the idea of the extreme importance of a man as the fundamental component of the organization. Productive work and the ability to achieve the set goals within the organization is possible only in comfortable surrounding conditions and in the implementation of competent and precise leadership that will lead to success.
