Literature Review

Alternative medicine is regarded as a very beneficial treatment since it involves the use of herbs, oils as well as massage in the treatment process which are regarded as very safe. Alternative medicine is known to cure both minor ailments as well as chronic diseases. Despite alternative medicine being considered as a non-approved treatment by many medical professionals, it has been noted to cure people suffering from a terminal illness where convectional or complementary medicine has failed. Alternative medicine has benefited many people, especially those who come from low economic status because it is generally affordable. Alternative medicine uses mostly resources that are readily available from society; subsequently, it is generally cheap for everyone to afford it. This has helped to make sure that the majority of people who cannot afford the conventional medicine that is very expensive receive treatment in order to recommence their daily activities (MedlinePlus par.2).

There are various forms of alternative medicine which include; Acupuncture, Acupressure, aromatherapy, ayurvedic medicine, Chiropractic as well as Chinese herbal remedies. Aromatherapy involves the use of oils extracted from plants in the treatment process. The oils are extracted from special plants and used while massaging or they can be used through inhalation. During messaging, the oil that is used for massaging is absorbed through the pores of the skins. When administered through the inhalation process, the scents that the oil gives act on the hypothalamus which is a part of the brain that affects the hormonal system. The smell released may alleviate the patient’s stress level, affect metabolism or affect mood or libido. Another form of alternative medicine is Acupuncture. This is the type of alternative medicine that involves inserting a needle into particular body points to improve one’s health and body well-being. This process started in China more than 2000 years ago. Research has indicated that acupuncture is noted to prevent nausea and vomiting, especially after surgery or chemotherapy. It is also noted to relieve pain although scientists have not fully comprehended how acupuncture operates. They assume that it helps in the activity of the body that regulates pain-killing chemicals. Similarly, they associate acupuncture with the ability to control how one releases those chemicals that control blood pressure and flow. Acupressure is also an alternative form of medicine. It operates similarly to acupuncture although the latter uses a needle while the former uses fingers. Moreover, chiropractic is another form of alternative medicine that is used in the treatment of patients suffering from muscle, joint as well as bone problems. The fundamental principle in chiropractic is that the body mechanism has the capability to heal on its own. It is mostly administered to treat spine-related problems (MedlinePlus par.4-5).
