Britain is known as one country that had many colonies at one single time. Most of these colonies decided to wage war against Britain but they could not win easily since it had a strong fighting army. One country that fought Britain was America. However, it lacked a skilled army and most people did not believe that they could win hence decided to stay out of the war. This gave Britain an upper hand but a series of things happened in the course of the war that finally secured America’s victory. (Savas & Dameron 258)
Key among these things was the large fighting army fronted by the Americans. By 1775, the tension between America and the British was clearly evident. During this time, General Washington asked the Continental Congress to provide a regular American army. After realizing the Americans were suffering so many defeats, Congress agreed to pay more people to join the army and this bigger force was more effective in winning the war. Secondly, the Continental Congress decided to look for a qualified man to lead the army and George Washington was chosen since he had experience fighting French and Indian wars. He led the Americans to war against the British causing King George to declare that the colonies were in an open rebellion. The ensuing battle saw the Americans defeat the British.
The third reason that strengthened the Americans was the awareness they received from the document Thomas Paine published called “Common Sense” that was highly criticizing King George lll. This document encouraged the people enormously and they now found that they had a cause to fight for. The new focused fighting was an important key in defeating the British. The fourth reason was that French had attacked Britain abroad. This called for Britain to fight back hence shifting their focus from America. The distraction cost them a lot in terms of financing the war. This tilted the balance in favour of the Americans and they managed to rout out the Britons.
The fifth reason was that the British commander General William Howe had stopped the war in 1776 where he had control in New York, Trenton and Princeton. Washington decided to attack at this time. He surprised them and the Americans managed to capture Trenton. The sixth reason was that many more Americans decided to join the army giving it a boost. Their commander George Washington never lost hope that they would one day have victory over Britons and continued to fight on. Finally, this struggle was rewarded.
The seventh reason was that Congress was beginning to have faith in Washington and they increased his powers and this made it possible to continue the fight for the independence. The eighth reason is that the Americans were fighting from home while the British had to carry their fighting weapons across a wide ocean. The ninth reason was that the British officers were making many mistakes especially their commander General William Howe because of his slow pace at the beginning of the war. This gave the Americans an opportunity to survive two difficult winters. Lastly, the Americans had victory at Saratoga and this gave them the support of the French. The new coalition between the French and America finally forced the British to leave and the peoples dream was realized.
