A Form of Discrimination and Human Rights Violations

General Domestic Violence Definition

These are situations in which one person controls or attempts to control the behavior and feelings of another. Within domestic violence as a generalized category, there are more specific categories defined by the nature of the relationship between the abuser and the victim and their living conditions. There are many myths in society about the problem of domestic violence. Stereotyping of the problem begins with the perceptions of the appearance and social status of women subjected to violence. Violence exists in all social groups, regardless of income, education, or position in society.

Models of Care that Have Evolved in Caring for Victims of Intentional Violence

Based on the relevance of the problem, models and methods of assistance to victims of domestic violence have been developed. The leading technologies of social work with victims of domestic violence is social prevention, which includes mediation, social therapy, adaptation, and social rehabilitation. Social prevention creates the conditions for the regular socialization of the person based on the principles of morality (American Psychological Association, 2020). The result of social prevention will be modeling the internal control of the individual, which is based on the norms and values defined in the process of work with the social work specialist. It is also based on increasing the resistance of the victim of domestic violence to the unfavorable factors of the social environment. In work with women, social prevention is a set of measures that contribute to functioning, preventing further difficult life situations (Stanhope & Lancaster, 2016). Social prevention is of particular importance in preventing deviant behavior by women that may develop after experiencing violence.

Relation of Substances to Domestic Violence

One of the most common causes of domestic and intentional violence is using substances such as alcohol and hard drugs. The use of such substances has its negative impact not only within one particular family. The problem has grown into a national and even global problem. Obviously, the most devastating and noticeable impact is on the victim of violence in each case. The victim has little ability to bring the abuser to his feelings and prevent the violence.

Violence under the influence of psychoactive substances is particularly dangerous because a person under the influence of alcohol or drugs loses his or her common sense and logic (Akhmedshina, 2020).

A Form of Discrimination and Human Rights Violations

Repeated rampant substance abuse has a huge devastating effect on the victim’s family as well. The children of a regularly abused parent may grow up to be withdrawn, sociopathic, or psychopathic individuals. It is because the victim’s family environment is never comfortable, and the parents and children live in a constant state of stress and anticipation of danger. It is important to note that this danger does not come from outside, but from their direct parent, which undermines such children’s ability to trust their loved ones in the future. Substance abuse also has a substantial impact on various communities. People become more withdrawn and intimidated, and, in some cases, feared society even begins to stigmatize the victim rather than the perpetrator. This distorts the community’s moral values, leading to an even greater incidence of violence. The distortion of moral values poses a threat to the individual community and the nation as a whole, leading to an overall increase in crime within the country.
