Executive Summary

As appointed by the ABC engineering company as their external consultant, I accept this appointment, as I believe I am the right person to handle the task they planned to outsource. What makes me the right person for this role is that I bring concrete project management and resource planning skills, having been in this industry for more than 20 years. My expertise extends broadly to the use of digital technologies to ensure efficiency in production and operations.

As the company plans to venture into the digital sector, it needs proper planning and guidance to ensure its success. The creation of the Digital Transformation Services (DTS) initiative is becoming a matter of high expectations and wonder. It is worth noting that although ABC has incorporated digital technology into its product lines to a great extent, it has a few limitations in data analytics. Hor, the DTS not only faces difficulties obtaining the impacts and getting financial support but also tackles them efficiently.

Introduction

ABC Engineering is a well-known global organization. It has four major divisions that constitute its operational structure. These divisions include Automation, Electrical Switchgear, Electrical Instruments, and Engineering Services. All units of the enterprise perform different and unique functions and contribute to the products and services the company offers, which usually determine its market position.

Objectives comprise plans to address existing operational inefficiencies, the formulation of strategic steps, and the verification of the feasibility of e-transformation programs. This paper aims to offer a holistic evaluation of ABC in situations that will provide direction for decision-making and to develop a structure fit for the digital age.

System View of Operations and Information Management

Analysis of ABC Engineering’s Operational Structure

The Company’s divisions have different functions, although they work in coordination to ensure the company’s framework is adhered to. The automation division aims to lead the entire manufacturing and integration of automation equipment across factories worldwide. This split aimed to obtain the resource from external software vendors that provide automation solutions.

In contrast, the Electrical Switch Gear segment primarily serves as a manufacturer of high-voltage electrical equipment and concerns government-owned utility services. The Engineering Services division’s role is to provide engineering design assistance to other sectors, together with their existing and prospective customers (Daniotti et al., 2020). Moreover, this division provides post-purchase upkeep and services to their customers and staff; however, they find it difficult to achieve profitability.

These impediments are further compounded by the growing threat of recurrent global financial crises, which heighten vulnerability and hinder adaptive management of the extensive risks. To overcome these deficiencies, it is essential to develop an inclusive strategy and context that involves streamlining processes, leveraging innovative technology, and shifting the organization’s mindset. ABC Engineering could improve its operational agility, responsiveness, and overall performance by leveraging digital technology and promoting work integration (Princes et al., 2024). This work lays the groundwork for advising ABC on how to restore its operational resilience and, at the same time, achieve growth through digitalization.

Examination of Supply Chains and Information Flows

The supply chains of ABC Engineering are often highly complex, involving stakeholders from both internal departments and external suppliers. The Automation division, like other divisions within the company, relies on purchasing materials from suppliers to resource its factories and production plants located at both local and international sites. The Electrical Switch Gear division determines the materials needed to manufacture high-voltage equipment and procures them from the state utilities industry, placing these orders with state utilities. In contrast to developed supply chains, a significant limitation persists in information flow (Lee et al., 2024). The existence of silos creates obstacles to interdepartmental collaboration, which, in the end, affects decision-making within the corporation and the ability to respond promptly.

Considering the widespread financial instability and downturn, the primary goal is to improve the effectiveness of the supply chain and information flow systems. Digital technologies, such as cloud-based ERP systems and analytics, can enhance supply chain transparency, speed, and efficiency (Slack et al., 2019). Articulating a challenging and collaborative environment and focusing on digital transformation projects that enable ABC Engineering to effectively manage risks, identify opportunities, and sustain itself in times of constant change.

Recommendations for Adapting to the Global Financial Crisis

ABC Engineering should aim to make agility and resilience the first principles of its operations, rather than just tactics, to manage the global financial crisis effectively. To diversify the risk of interruptions, scenario tactics must be evaluated by exploring multiple supply sources and enhancing supply visibility. Last but not least, targeting the move to cloud-based ERP systems with significant financial assistance could improve operational efficiency by enabling instant data insights and optimized procedures.

Furthermore, the creation of an innovative culture and a culture that promotes cooperation must be highly effective to enable the business to navigate emerging market conditions (Lee et al., 2025). These are: the economics of higher-cost-saving measures through solo action and the formation of strategic alliances. By practicing these strategies, ABC engineering company will mitigate the effects of the crisis and become more resilient in the future.

Diagnosing Operations and Information System Implementation

Factors Contributing to the ERP System Implementation Failure

The reasons for the failure of ABC Engineering’s ERP deployment can be viewed from many perspectives. Although training is inadequate, including in change management initiatives, employees are still resisting the system; hence, efficiently utilizing it will be a challenge. Growth has stagnated, and potential efficiencies have been missed because the response to a changing clientele and geographic variations has not been adequately addressed (Lee et al., 2024). Apart from that, the rise in customization and the presence of different order variations have not only inflated costs but also delayed installations. It has also undermined credibility, making the system less effective.

Proposal for Recovery Strategies and Integration of ERP Functionalities

To ensure a successful ERP system deployment, ABC Engineering should implement the proposed strategic measures. Starting on an important step, a gap analysis to identify misalignments between the ERP and business operations is critical. This research will aid in identifying the most critical changes and more suitable protocols to achieve the highest output. Following this, it is essential to allocate financial resources to professional training courses and change management activities to ensure the widespread acceptance and application of the ERP system.

Providing the necessary competences and even eradicating employees’ fear of change could help ensure a successful transition for health sector employees in their new positions (Vial, 2021). Also, a phased approach to system improvement is prudent, as it practically minimizes risks and helps the community adjust to the new system. It should be emphasized that the effective realization of dreams requires teamwork and accelerated recovery time. What can be achieved by providing the key functions of ERP that are aligned with the mission, and ensuring the highest Return on Investment (ROI) is crucial.

As a supplement to this, performance indicators of a more defined nature, coupled with robust monitoring mechanisms, will ensure that ABC Engineering Company stays on top of progress and assesses whether the recovery strategies employed are effective. Through constant evaluation and monitoring, it is possible to ensure alignment with corporate objectives and keep progress on course. This will provide an opportunity for continuous model development (Sebastian et al., 2020). The company ABC Engineering can easily overcome past difficulties by successfully implementing recovery methods and integrating its features with ERP, and will find a comfortable position for future performance by using digital technology to operate the business effectively.

Emphasis on Improving Financial Performance

ABC Engineering had to consider financial effectiveness alongside subsequent activities, for which the implementation of the ERP system was a major failure. It is important to implement robust cost management systems to address elevated spending on customization and variation orders. Won it over the importance of fashioning that kind of culture where the criteria are efficiency and productivity in the performance of various departments is a positive factor (Weber-Lewerenz, 2021). The core focus would be on systematizing operations, properly allocating resources, and, finally, growing our Return on Investment (ROI) through technological investments.

Debate on Digital Transformation Services (DTS) Project

Assessment of the DTS Project and Identified Opportunities

ABC Engineering will face both potential benefits and challenges from engaging Digital Transformation Services (DTS). Primarily, the ABC’s DTS project may be interpreted as one of many digital transformation initiatives that edge the organization ahead of its peers in the use of digital technology. ABC will be able to find new sources of revenue and meet growing market demands by developing its innovative capacities in digital transformation, including internal activities and, potentially, customer-facing initiatives.

In this predicament, ABC Corporation has the opportunity to create a gap between itself and the competition and to offer additional benefits to its clientele. ABC reaches the pinnacle of decision-making through data analytics, enabling the extraction of useful insights from ERP data (Vial, 2021). AI and ML have the power to enable a smooth, efficient approach to preventive maintenance and improvement, thereby raising overall operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.

Additionally, it enables ABC Company to expand beyond the non-banking services market and attract customers from other industries interested in trying its services. ABC, as a result, has the capacity to leverage cutting-edge methodologies through digital transformation services to meet the ever-increasing needs of firms facing complex business challenges. Such circumstances, on the other hand, can be fundamental in developing ABC’s clientele and making the company a real and responsible business partner in the world of digital devices.

While on the pocket, the DTS has financial backing and resource allocation, alongside unclear profitability constraints. To avoid discrepancies and limited resources and to obtain funding, precise preparation and alignment of the strategic goals with the solution are needed (Appio et al., 2021). In addition, establishing a task-driven ecosystem and infrastructure with skilled workers focused on achieving the DTS project’s objectives might require a significant investment in training and technology.

The prospects of ABC Engineering turning to DTS to shape the most successful strategic digital transformation are rather high, as it will provide ABC Engineering with an opportunity to capitalize on new areas of development. However, this success is based on adopting a strategic methodology, efficiently allocating resources, and understanding customers’ needs and market dynamics. ABC can then harness the potential of the web and address potential barriers to compete favorably in the virtual market.

Challenges in Measuring Benefits and Securing Funding

ABC Engineering technicians face a challenge in specifying the pros of the Digital Transformation Services (DTS) project. Reporting the financial effects of digital transformation programs can be challenging, particularly when considering ROI and cost reductions. Setting concrete KPIs, such as the direct financial contribution to the DTS project to improve customer experience, operating efficiency, and competitive position, remains controversial because they are intangible.

Additionally, raising financial resources for the DTS project, considering the existence of multiple developing projects and already invested resources, is an equally important and difficult constraint (Vial, 2021). The CEO’s decision to invest $10 million in a distinct theoretical projection underscores the importance of presenting both results and evaluations that are immediately exploitable. Meanwhile, the outcomes of the DTS project and the risks associated with them create uncertainty, making it crucial to present the audience with a sound business case and to demonstrate to stakeholders that the project is a persistently valuable idea.

The availability of sufficient personnel, a robust technological infrastructure, and full backup of financial assistance will automatically ensure the successful implementation of the DTS projects for the ABC Engineering company. For the company to obtain the required personnel, it must invest in training, technology infrastructure, and procurement. Although the company has had various potential strategic objectives on the other side, progress on the DTS project has become complex due to financing constraints. The proposed strategy should include long-term planning, clear communication channels among stakeholders, and the involvement of everyone (Vial, 2021). For effective decision-making and resource allocation, it should be a top priority to establish sound metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) that demonstrate the DTS project’s impact.

Besides, by designating that policies and the DTS project are well aligned with the overall strategic target and by following up on the DTS project’s progress and the positive impact it would produce, it will be possible to garner support and engagement from the senior administration and stakeholders. The executive team of ABC Engineering needs to join forces to tackle two problems: quantifying the advantages and securing financial support for the DTS project, which means that solving one can have a profound effect on the whole project. By implementing specific solutions to those challenges and highlighting their advantages, ABC will find itself on solid ground to strategically position itself to ensure success in enabling digital transformation and to explore any forthcoming growth opportunities.

Consideration of Alternative Funding Sources and Leadership Options

In view of the obstacles to obtaining financial resources through ABC Engineering’s Digital Transformation Services initiative, the company is prompted to explore other funding avenues and weigh different leadership options to ensure the initiative’s success. Also, seeking external funding from a venture capitalist or forming an alliance with a strategic supplier is among the possible alternatives (Slack et al., 2019).

Networking opportunities with investors, technology partners, or digital transformation specialists who can assist not only with budgeting but also with access to the best networks, resources, and experience could be invaluable for pursuing our digital transformation strategies. In this case, the DTS project can be seen as a fully separate company of ABC Engineering Inc., operating independently and securing funding from any sources, such as VC or angel investors. This method gives the DTS board of directors the option to choose alternative financing.

ABC Engineering is expected to inevitably conclude on the best option for the person to be in charge of the DTS project. Internal champions have thorough knowledge of ABC and the internal culture. At the same time, external leaders provide innovative ideas, paradigms, and proven track records in digital transformation through their own past experiences.

Adopting the other technique, namely, the use of a collaborative team of internal and external experts. Bestowed upon the individual team, both internal and external experts can be highly effective due to the respective advantages of the two approaches (Baiyere et al., 2020). The hybrid participatory model used here ensures collaboration, creativity, and the presence of divergent views, which will enhance the comprehensive, multifaceted approach that will prevail in ABC Engineering’s digital transformation.

Digital Technologies vs. Transformation

Debate on the Importance of Digital Technologies Versus Transformative Change

There is a constantly increasing debate over the importance of digital technologies and the transformation of the world, which, in reality, means finding the proper balance between innovation and transformation of business models and the optimal choice of technology. The supporter of this method would undoubtedly emphasize that the digital age’s fastest-moving environment can only be kept up with through an investment in technology-infused solutions and tools (Baiyere et al., 2020). The new technologies have changed everything- the development of AI, IoT, and cloud computing, among others, brings unbelievable opportunities for improving efficiency, engaging in creative processes, and making communication with customers easier.

Recommendations for Aligning Technology Investments with Long-Term Goals

To align technological investments with long-term objectives, ABC Engineering should adopt a strategic approach that balances immediate requirements and future aspirations. First and foremost, it is crucial to perform a comprehensive evaluation of the existing technological capabilities and pinpoint any deficiencies in relation to long-term objectives. Additionally, it is important to cultivate a culture that promotes creativity and cooperation throughout the firm (Criado-Perez et al., 2022). Involving employees from various departments and hierarchical levels in the decision-making process ensures their support and alignment with long-term objectives.

Moreover, it is crucial to invest in technological solutions that are both scalable and adaptable, able to adapt to changing company requirements. To mitigate the risk of technical obsolescence and optimize long-term return on investment, it is advisable to select platforms and systems that provide interoperability, customization, and future expansion (Criado-Perez et al., 2022). Periodic evaluations and modifications informed by performance data empower ABC Engineering to make necessary adjustments and realign investments in accordance with evolving company goals.
