Research Question
This study’s primary goal is to evaluate how applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapies help hospitalized children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) manage challenging behaviors. Sanders et al.’s (2020) study concerns the following question: What are the implications for patient care and clinical outcomes in hospital settings, and how effective are ABA therapies in reducing problematic behaviors in this demographic? Developing targeted behavioral management solutions in pediatric healthcare settings requires a thorough investigation along these lines.
Sample Size
Thirty-six children with ASD, aged 6 to 17, comprised the sample in the Sanders et al. (2020) study. The purpose of this group selection was to encompass a broad spectrum of ASD severity and the accompanying problematic behaviors that are seen in hospital settings, both medical and psychiatric. The researchers wanted to comprehensively evaluate the effects of ABA therapies on controlling problematic behaviors by selecting participants from this age range and context. The practical and broad application of the therapies to a variety of hospital-based pediatric care scenarios for children with ASD can be thoroughly explored thanks to the deliberate selection of sample size and demographics.
Design
To assess the effectiveness of brief ABA therapies for children with ASD in a hospital setting, Sanders et al. (2020) used a randomized controlled trial design. This design allowed a direct comparison between the intervention group and a control group that received monitoring and evaluation alone. The study employed this strict scientific technique to establish the causal relationships required for therapeutic applications. It provided independent evidence of how ABA therapies affect problematic behaviors in hospitalized children with ASD.
Results
The study’s findings showed that, compared to their counterparts in the control group, the ASD children who received brief ABA sessions showed notable improvements in their clinical severity ratings. Despite these positive results, the study found no evidence of a substantial difference in hospital stay length or parental evaluations of problematic behaviors (Sanders et al., 2020). Its effectiveness and viability in a clinical setting were demonstrated by the positive response the intervention received from both families and medical experts. This suggested that ABA techniques might be a practical addition to pediatric medical procedures for the treatment of behavioral issues related to ASD in children.

It implies that ABA methods could be included as a regular part of care for hospitalized children with ASD if sufficient training and resources are available. Behavioral specialists should be integrated into hospital teams through a multidisciplinary approach to ensure interventions are carried out successfully. Therefore, the study calls for ongoing research to maximize ABA interventions for that context and to provide a comprehensive care model that customizes therapy for ABA to the unique needs of hospitalized children with ASD.
