Introduction
The essential thing about working in a group or team is the opportunity to share ideas and make decisions together. Even though the decision-making process can sometimes be long and complicated, it can bring enough benefits to the team. Depending on the situation, the process can be more or less successful. I have encountered both scenarios where the decision-making process could have been more successful and not.
An Example of a Successful Group Decision-Making Process
One of the most prosperous times when I was part of a group decision-making process was after completing a project in our organization. The whole team worked hard and long, and we had to decide how our work would be evaluated. We discussed all our ideas and proposals and came to a unanimous decision, which all the team members accepted. This was a significant decision because it reflected our teamwork and brought many benefits to our organization. At that moment, I realized that an effective decision-making process could benefit the team.
An Example of a Failed Group Decision-Making Process
Unfortunately, not all decision-making processes go so well. For example, we once had to decide how to distribute the work among the team members. Some of us thought most tasks should be broadcast equally, while others wanted tasks to be allocated according to strength. This led to an argument and even the loss of friendly relationships. At that moment, I realized how important it is to have representatives from different factions in the team to avoid misunderstandings and disputes and have a good decision-making process.
Conclusion
All things considered, the group decision-making process can be very successful if we learn to listen to each other, share ideas, and reach an agreement. And this applies to all kinds of group decision-making processes, regardless of context. My recommendation for people making decisions in a group is to share thoughts, listen to each other, and strive to reach an agreement.
