Clinical Systems Informatics Solutions

The three clinical systems I did not know existed in our organization are the computer-based online patient record (CPR), telemedicine system (TMS), and the health information system (HIS).

CPR: Computer-Based Online Patient Record

Description

The system makes health records of both the outpatient and inpatient clients available online in a secure network. This system enables this information to be updated automatically each time a patient is treated at the clinic.

Importance

The CPR system allows the organization to keep the health records of its clients in a secure online platform from where it can be retrieved with ease (Aldan, 2009).

The system is a replacement of manual record-keeping, which is tedious and might be easily lost in case of fire or other disasters.

Improving patient care

The clinic can easily retrieve health information about a patient, including treatment history to ensure that each patient is given a personalized treatment based on the history and progress of each treatment session (Aldan, 2009).

Advantage of the system

The system enables quick access to patient records to facilitate faster and accurate treatment.

The system is available online, thus can be accessed at different points within the clinic at the same time unlike the manual records (Ekenberg, 2009).

Challenges of the system

The system is dependent on the availability of the internet.

The system requires frequent maintenance to avoid the instance of system failure (Ekenberg, 2009).

Managing client confidentiality

The system is based on a secure online platform that cannot be accessed without the permission of the clinic.

The system does not record the personal details of the customer since each client is allocated a number as a form of identity.

TMS: Telemedicine System

Description

The telemedicine system is a health informatics network that manages prescriptions of each client. After diagnosis and treatment, the doctor login to the system to update the prescription of a client and tracks the availability of the drugs.

Importance

The system tracks the prescription and availability of the drugs to avoid the instance of the wrong prescription as a result of confusion (Anderson & Dougall, 2011).

Improving patient care

The system reduces the time taken between diagnosis of issuance of the prescription since the pharmacy department received an automated alert and makes the drugs available even before the client arrives from the diagnosis room.

Advantage of the system

The telemedicine system improves on the efficiency of service since clients are not subjected to long lines in the pharmacy (Angell, 2012). The system is dependent on the availability of the internet.

Challenges of the system

The system requires frequent maintenance to avoid the instance of system failure (Ekenberg, 2009).

Managing client confidentiality

The system uses a unique identification number allocated to each client to avoid the instance of leakage of personal details.

The system is very secure and constantly monitored by the IT department.

HIS: Health Information System

Description

The health information system provides a backup to the computer-based online patient record and the telemedicine systems. The system is hosted on an iCloud and is used whenever there is a failure in the computer-based online patient record or telemedicine systems (Clark, 2007).

Importance

The HIS reconciles the other systems and ensures that no patient information is lost after a system reboot or failure (Checkland, 2010).

Improving patient care

The HIS supports the computer-based online patient record and telemedicine systems to improve on efficiency and accuracy of services at the clinic.

Advantage of the system

The system makes it easy to access patient records and treatment history by just a click of a button.

Challenges of the system

Since the system is secured by Oracle, the cost of maintenance is very high (Ekenberg, 2009).

Managing client confidentiality

The system is very secure and constantly monitored by the IT department (Ekenberg, 2009).
