Developing Action-Centered Leadership in Criminal Justice

Introduction

Leadership is an integral part of any field, as it helps guide the team and helps each individual grow and fulfill their potential. As a person working in criminal justice, I am responsible for nurturing other leaders as well. Although the process of developing leaders depends on an individual, such as when it comes to motivation, it is still necessary to ensure that other elements, ranging from setting goals to evaluation, are acknowledged.

Developing Leaders

Goal Setting

The first step when developing action-centered leaders involves setting SMART goals. By creating specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound goals, I can set many expectations for my subordinates.

Planning

Another step that I will include in the process is based on planning. Planning is an essential part of any process, and by breaking down the goals into manageable tasks, I will simplify the process for the team. However, besides simply sharing ideas and goals, I am responsible for briefing everybody on the team. This approach will help set specific expectations for everyone and share responsibilities.

Controlling

Then, it will be essential to follow the control step, where I will monitor the progress and motivation of those on the team. By doing so, I will ensure that every member contributes and that their efforts are practical.

Evaluating

Evaluation is crucial when the objectives are met, since it helps reflect on the weaknesses and strengths. This part of the process can help me, as a leader, become more knowledgeable and make adjustments for the team.

Motivating

Additionally, I should not forget about motivation, which significantly contributes to success. Individual motivation accounts for 50% of motivation, whereas external variables, including rewards and recognition, account for the other 50%.

Being an Example

Finally, organizing and setting an example is crucial to the process since, while it is essential to ensure that everybody is involved, it is additionally crucial to lead by example, which will set expectations.

Conclusion

Hence, although each person’s leadership development process is unique, it is still important to ensure that other factors, such as goal-setting and evaluation, are taken into account. By setting clear, quantifiable, achievable, pertinent, and time-bound goals, I can establish many expectations for my subordinates. Evaluation is crucial because it fosters reflection on weaknesses and strengths after achieving the objectives. However, it is additionally vital to inspire people and lead by example.
