One of the possible aspects that affect the persons’ perception of their bodies and attractiveness is the closest social surrounding. Family, friends, or romantic partners sometimes unknowingly can make people feel insecure and push them towards the development of the eating disorder. It can happen by criticizing the body, compassion with someone who is slimmer, and blaming them for eating a specific kind and amount of food.
Also, food labels are another contributor to the worsening of those who have an eating disorder. Reading the labels and the information on calories and overall nutritional value makes people eat fewer portions or choose products that can damage their health (Haynos, 2017). Therefore, the best option for friends and family to support their loved ones who struggle with the disorder is never to press or judge them. The progress might be slow and sometimes even can turn to regression. Thus, those on treatment should feel unconditional love and support from their surroundings through regular visits, spending time together, and focusing on the people’s favorite activities.
