Introduction
The Montefiore Medical Substance Abuse Program Clinic provides services for individuals struggling with addiction. Substance-dependent individuals often have comorbidities, including human immunodeficiency virus. It is important to provide patients with the necessary information and tools to achieve viral suppression, as untreated HIV correlates with the weakening of the immune system and the development of preventable infections. The intervention supports the position that an informed patient is more likely to understand the benefits of following the doctor’s advice.
The purpose is to establish a platform where educators can share resources to help combat negative health effects. In the current paper, the establishment of a learning environment for patients with human immunodeficiency virus is approached by considering the setting and confidentiality. In addition, cultural and literary characteristics are applied to establish a diverse platform alongside technological advancements.
Setting and Confidentiality
It is critical to follow existing guidelines to ensure that the educational intervention is evidence-based. One of the ELEOT considerations is the physical environment, namely, the space in which the program takes place (Effective learning environments observation tool, 2023). The Montefiore Clinic has a room for group therapy sessions equipped with the necessary educational materials, including a projector for visual aids and interactive tools. Confidentiality is similarly critical under the condition that sensitive topics such as HIV are discussed.
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) provides patients with legal protection against the disclosure of private information (CDC, 2022). One aspect of anonymity is the room selection, as it is not an open space and is relatively remote from the busier areas of the facility. If certain patients refuse to attend the sessions and opt for private consultations, they will be provided with them. Subsequently, speakers, including specialists in infectious diseases, pharmacists, and mental health professionals, will be informed about the importance of adhering to the aforementioned HIPAA guidelines.
Considerations
It is paramount to acknowledge that the Montefiore Clinic patients are diverse despite having one common struggle: substance abuse. Researchers point out that HIV transmission is partially impacted by cultural traits (Fauk et al., 2021). During the program, individual differences will be considered and incorporated.
The materials will be comprehensive and inclusive, and the information will be shared in a way that avoids complex terminology to minimize discrepancies related to literacy levels. It is also imperative to acknowledge the stigma that people with the diagnoses experience and facilitate a safe and comfortable environment for them in which no judgment is present. The socioeconomic status of the participants will also be accounted for, as a lack of resources may impact the individual’s ability to follow the recommendations.
Strategies
The strategies to be applied support the establishment and maintenance of a welcoming and safe environment in which people can learn to manage their conditions. First and foremost, according to the ELEOT guidelines, learners are to demonstrate that a sense of community and engagement is present in the group (Effective learning environments observation tool, 2023). Hence, inclusivity will be promoted by motivating participants to engage in dialogue and share their experiences with HIV. Another technique is to tailor meetings to each person’s needs. As previously highlighted, patients can schedule one-on-one consultations to address specific issues.
Technology and Timing
A technology that can facilitate patient education is online platforms. Patients will be provided with access to evidence-based resources with valuable information on living with the condition (Blackburn et al., 2021). The initiative consists of four group meetings, along with consultations available upon request for each patient.
The sessions will last 1 hour each, with an additional 20 minutes per participant, separately if required. Collective interventions have been linked to increased adherence to antiviral therapy (Mbah et al., 2021). It is predicted that the selected timing will provide people with the necessary information to address their diagnosis adequately.
Conclusion
Informing patients with HIV about the nature of their diagnosis and ways to manage it is critical in maintaining their health and well-being. The aim is to conduct an educational intervention in accordance with ELEOT guidelines. Patient anonymity will be respected, and cultural and literacy considerations will be taken into account. Four-hourly meetings and the implementation of supportive technology are expected to facilitate high information retention and, in turn, adherence to medications and lifestyle changes.
