Emily’s Unhappiness in “I Stand Here Ironing?” by Olsen

I Stand Here Ironing

I stand here ironing is a title that describes the life that Emily undergoes during her childhood, and as one iron in a real sense, he or she tends back and forth at the same position several times. This is the same thing in Emily’s life. She has constantly faced challenges as she went through her childhood.

Emily despite, having a terrific talent in acting and comedy is sober and is self-conscious of the complexion of her hair. Emily’s mum is responsible for Emily’s unhappiness; this is so because she did not give her the proper care a mother is supposed to give to her child. She left Emily once to her neighbors whenever she went to work, and she did not breastfeed Emily properly, that is why she was weak and eventually was able to get tuberculosis. Emily was forced to stay with her grandparents, so her mum could be able to do her chores well. Emily’s mum did this because her father had left them due to the extreme poverty that they were in at that time.

Emily had no choice but to accept the man who married her mum into her life. She undergoes these pressures in life because one parent brought her up. Having only one parent was not easy for her as the mother was not well off in terms of wealth. They moved from time to time for a new home. This meant creating new friends all the time. Emily became a sober loner because she could not trust a man in her life for fear of experiencing the same things that her mum went through. She was always self-conscious about her dark hair complexion.

Emily had to struggle throughout her life due to the recklessness of her mother when she was a teenager, and Emily is extremely conscious. She did not want to make the same mistake that her mum made.
