Introduction

Erik Erikson’s psychosocial theory and James Marcia’s identity status theory are two well-known theories from the field of psychology. Erikson’s Psychosocial Theory

According to Erikson’s psychosocial theory, development consists of successive stages, each of which is determined by a unique crisis or challenge that the developing personality faces in its society. Marcia’s Theory of Identity Status

Therefore, Marcia proposed four identity statuses that people go through before they fully form themselves in society (Ergün, 2020). These stages include diffusion, characterized by the absence of research or a single point of view, and redemption, which involves accepting one’s identity without examining it.

Moratorium indicates the beginning of active research, while achievement is the creation of a coherent and holistic identity. Marcia also described a theory that identity is a dynamic concept that changes depending on age and status (Ergün, 2020). Furthermore, adolescents often feel pressure from society to excel academically, which can exacerbate their insecurity.

Marcia’s theory emphasizes the problems of exploration and identity, meaning that college students may face misunderstandings from society when making important decisions (Batool & Ghayas, 2020). This issue relates to the fact that their perception of identity may differ from that of the general public due to a lack of research. As a result, it is challenging for students to choose a classroom or specialty (Batool & Ghayas, 2020). They fear making the wrong choice and experience anxiety about their own fulfillment.

Strategies to Overcome Age-Related Problems

To address the concerns that adolescents face, it is crucial to create a supportive and developmentally appropriate environment for them. The reason is that it can help them to reflect on their own and get resources (Saracho, 2023). Therefore, it is crucial to create programs and courses that provide students with opportunities to find mentors who will support them.

The primary objective of mentors is not to resolve the problem but to support adolescents in finding the right solution that aligns with their identity. It is also crucial to create opportunities for experiential learning, which may include internships or volunteer work (Saracho, 2023). This will help adolescents navigate their career choices and select their future specialization.

Additionally, counseling and career services are essential for students, providing access to specialists who can offer support. Accordingly, these professionals can provide emotional support and help them in the decision-making process (Saracho, 2023). However, adolescents value the opinions of their peers, so it is essential to create a space where they can communicate effectively with one another. This will allow them to share their thoughts and experiences and find the support they need (Saracho, 2023). Another option for resolving the identity crisis is to maintain a personal diary, which allows each college student to analyze their values and aspirations.

Conclusion

Thus, Erikson’s psychosocial theory and Marcia’s identity status theory are psychological theories that focus on identity development and problem-solving at different stages. While Erikson’s theory offers a broader perspective of the life span, Marcia’s theory focuses specifically on identity statuses. Furthermore, college students face unique challenges, including identity confusion, research, and commitments. To address these issues, it is crucial to create a supportive environment for self-reflection and research, provide counseling support, and facilitate their self-realization.
