Introduction
The traditions of griots and the peculiarities of the implementation of their music under the influence of modern trends is a complex issue. The composition Atlanta Kaira and its older and newer versions will be used for the analysis (GrrlRaisin). The two versions of this piece of music show significant differences in tempo and manner of performance. Griot music is vital in shaping global and local musical culture and reinforcing the bond between previous generations and current trends.
Comparison
For representatives of this musical direction, transmitting a specific idea connected with God through music is typical. Different cultural, political, and world trends condition the connection with divinity. In the earlier version of the musical composition, we can notice a more measured tempo and higher notes (Ali Farka). This choice reflects the measured pace of human acceptance of God’s existence. In other words, people try to lose themselves slowly and smoothly, like the pace of Atlanta Kaira, to look for their place in the world.
Compared with the more modern version of the composition, it is worth noting the faster tempo and more desperate notes in the vocal performance (GrrlRaisin). Such changes are directly related to the changing rhythm of life and the need to quickly get to know yourself in a considerable stream of digitalization. The shifting musical textures in a more modern version resemble a dialogue with the world than it was before (Bakan 227). A more modern version also has ethereal harmonies in breathy tones (Bakan 225). Earlier traditional versions focused on more vocally harmonized notes. The impact of the guitar, bass, and jazz traditions on the music can explain such a change.
A greater variety of sounds and accompaniment for the main instrument in a more modern composition is worth noting. A similar situation results from the same idea of diversifying the information and cultural space inherent in the contemporary world. This composition reflects how the process of cognition and acceptance of the world has changed in a person over specific periods of the existence of this culture.
The prevalence of this musical direction in America also made some adjustments to the musical traditions. In other words, such directions as blues, jazz, and funk were also reflected in the new vision of griot music (Bakan 227). So, for example, in Atlanta Kaira, it can be noted that the bluesy notes and a more intricate rhythm will make it possible to understand that the world is more complex and culturally connected than it seems at first glance.
The Role of Griots in the Modern World
The role played by the griots was very important for preserving the people’s history, especially centuries ago when technology was not so developed. Although it is no longer so relevant, such a role is still significant for preserving bloodlines and the history of families and communities, especially for societies where writing and reading are not expected. Griot music has influenced modern rap that originated among African Americans in the United States, many of whose roots go back to the peoples of West Africa. Accordingly, the influence of griots is also spreading on a global scale through modern rap.
Conclusion
Thus, global trends significantly changed the West African tradition of hereditary musicians called Jeli. In turn, griots also implicitly and openly influence global cultural trends through rap, jazz, fan, and other musical directions. Despite possible changes, keeping both traditional styles and accepting new ones is essential. The power of griot music is in balance and unification, which helps preserve historical insights and interpret them promptly.
