The moment, which makes me feel a lot of emotion, is from the film I Am Legend. Media clip is expressive, and, at the same time, it makes me think about some aspects of the medical personnel work. It is the moment from when the main character embodied by Will Smith is forced to say goodbye to his friend – dog Sam (“I Am Legend,” 2014). Doctors often have to face complex decisions, quickly respond to various situations, and always remain professionals. Thus, with this clip, I associate such nursing-related concepts as clinical decision-making, safety, and professionalism (Concept definitions, n. d.). Their use led the film character to actions, the commission of which concerning a person in the real world medicine causes many controversies.
The film character demonstrates clinical decision-making by assessing his dog’s state and predicting the further development of events based on his assessment. He decides on the most approved intervention, guided by the concept of safety, because in this way, he saves himself from infection, and Sam – from painful consequences. The protagonist also applies professional skills and knowledge to determine the diagnosis. However, such actions and decisions of the doctor raise the idea of euthanasia – a debatable phenomenon. Although the world in the film is the authors’ fantasy, and putting animals down takes place in modern realities, taking away life from a living creature is a serious ethical problem.
Religion is based on such virtues as love and service to others, preventing and alleviating human suffering. They are also the core of the fundamental principles of medical ethics. However, as science and technology evolve, some religious ideas may contradict medical decisions. In the performance of their duties, most doctors dominate professional views over religious ones. The possibility of such an option as voluntary leaving life can create pressure on those who are afraid to burden their loved ones. On the contrary, one should consider that the opportunity to serve people who need help is a blessing. Such help prompts people to abandon the false system of values and beliefs based on the desire for comfort at all costs – and accept another based on mutual love and care. Learning to appreciate people, not things or pleasures, means opening up to a much more dignified and happy life.
In my personal experience, it is the help to others that motivate me to continue my activities. It happened to me to take care of my relatives, and I felt useful and necessary. Such situations provide an opportunity to understand the value of human life and be grateful for it. I also believe that a person does not lose dignity during pain or suffering. These facts justify the importance of nursing and a correct understanding of its concepts.
Thus, in medical practice, the course of events often depends on the staff’s actions and their adherence to the principles of medical ethics. Caring for others will always be the basis of nursing activity. Religion will help find the right guidelines and motivation, form morally sound positions of medical workers. For these reasons, care and faith are essential to both patients and staff. The church’s cooperation with health care can yield positive results such as the revival of the spiritual traditions of medicine, and the awareness of the interdependence of spiritual and physical health of a person.
