Video Summary
The video called “In the Womb” presents an amazing discovery of the development of a newborn since the moment of the conception to the birth. Using computer imagery techniques, it is possible to observe the fetus in the mother’s womb and understand its complex nature. The video reflects on the fact that a mother provides shelter for her baby, ensuring her with food, water, and safety. The procedure of cells’ division and the processes involved in it are demonstrated, so that the viewers may correspond to the week of pregnancy to the period of fetus development. The video also illustrates the work of the ultrasound screening technique that allows observing the fetus without any harm. Along with body development, the video focuses on the appearance of senses. Even in the womb, the fetus can hear, touch, and even smell everything that surrounds her mother (“In the Womb”). By six weeks, it is considered that the fetus may survive outside the womb, yet some health risks increase regarding brain activity and lung volume. Also, the video reveals the importance of reflexes that are crucial to surviving such as swallowing and sucking – they are necessary to eat and drink. This video is rather important to understand the process of conception, fetus formation, and its development during the period of pregnancy. Namely, it explains that women are born with two ovaries, each of which contains about 200,000 immature ova. In the fallopian tube, the ovum meets the spermatozoon that participates in fertilization and the nucleus of which merges with the nucleus of the ovum. It was amazing to see how the heart is shaped like one of the first organs as well as the subsequent vivid parts of the fetus (Dubois et al. 58). It was also exciting to learn that by seven weeks, fingers are seen quite clearly, but their separation has not yet happened. The fetus begins to perform spontaneous movements of the hands-on effect of stimuli. One may note well-formed eyes that are already covered with eyelids, which protect them from drying out, and the girl can open her mouth.
It was especially interesting that identical twins show some interactive activity by 12 weeks, and girls tend to contact earlier than boys do. When it comes to childbirth, the uterus begins to contract periodically, which manifests as aching pains in the lower abdomen. The cervix is slightly opened, and the fetal head is pressed against the pelvic cavity. It is important to note that having a universal adaptive minimum of behavior, the newborn begins to adapt to the particular situation and the environment in which she lives in soon. The unconditioned reflexes give way to the deeper connections of the conditioned reflex nature since the baby begins to learn to live in the surrounding world. One can observe many of these reflexes in newborns. For example, a baby closes his or her eyes in response to bright light or a clap of hands near her head. This video was rather significant and simple to understand the described processes of fetus development. It will be useful to any viewer, be it a pregnant woman striving to know more about her baby or an average person, who wants to learn more about the human body and development.
