Group Development and Dynamics in a Diverse Team-Based Semester Project

Introduction

This reflective essay examines my experience as a group member for a semester project. The group was made up of three people, including me. K. was the group’s organizer, and the other two members were V. and C. We got to experience several stages of group development throughout the project, from forming to adjourning.

We also dealt with concepts of group dynamics, such as membership roles and norms. Furthermore, group members’ diversity and differences influenced group dynamics. This essay will examine these characteristics of the group experience and explain one difficulty that the group experienced, how it was handled, and how it could have been handled more efficiently.

Group Development

Forming

The group growth process is separated into several stages, which include forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning. Our group’s formation stage was marked by members getting to know one another and discussing project aims and objectives. During this time, K. was instrumental in forming the group and bringing its members together. We developed communication channels and established clear expectations for individual roles and duties.

Storming

During the storming stage, the group members were more acquainted with one another and the project’s requirements. Many arguments and disagreements concerning the project’s direction, scope, and strategy marked this stage. Yet, the group members worked together to overcome these challenges and build a clear understanding of the project’s requirements.

Norming

The norming stage was distinguished by forming norms and common expectations among group members. This stage was distinguished by greater group cohesion and trust. Members got more at ease with one another throughout this stage, and the group’s work became more efficient.

Performing

During the performing stage, the group members collaborated and worked successfully to attain the project goals. At this point, the members of the group had formed a good working connection and were comfortable sharing ideas and criticism. The project was completed, and the group was disbanded at adjourning. This stage was marked by group performance reflection and a review of lessons learned.

Group Dynamics

Roles

Group dynamics are the interactions between group members that affect the group’s overall performance. Group dynamics include membership roles, conflict, cohesion, communication, and norms. The exact functions and obligations allocated to each group member are referred to as membership roles. K. was the group organizer in our group, responsible for organizing and arranging group events. V. and C. acted as group members who contributed to the general work of the group.

Conflict

Conflict is an unavoidable component of group dynamics, and it can result from differences in attitudes, ideas, and viewpoints. During the storming stage, our group had disagreements that were resolved by open and honest dialogue.

Cohesion

The level of attraction and attachment between group members is called cohesion. Members built a strong working connection and shared expectations at the norming stage, resulting in cohesion.

Communication

Communication is necessary for good group dynamics and entails sharing information and feedback among group members. Our group formed communication through various media, including email and group meetings.

Norms

Norms are the unwritten standards and expectations that regulate group members’ behavior. During the norming stage, our group developed norms that regulated our interactions and decision-making processes.

Influence of Diversity and Difference

Diversity and differences among group members can have various effects on group dynamics. Our group was diverse regarding ethnic backgrounds, academic fields, and personal experiences. This diversity influenced the group’s decision-making procedures and problem-solving methodologies.

Problem

During the storming period of our group’s development, variety and difference were visible, an example of the influence of diversity and difference. Due to the variety of experiences and points of view that our group represents, we had disagreements on how to proceed with the project and how to approach it (Wu & Cormican, 2021). While some of the group’s participants favored taking a more theoretical approach to the undertaking, others were more interested in developing a more hands-on strategy. In addition, some of the participants chose to center their attention on the qualitative parts of the project, while others favored quantitative analysis.

Solution

To overcome this challenge, we convened a meeting of the whole team to hash out our disagreements and agree on how the project’s needs should be met. During the course of the meeting, we came to the conclusion that the variety of our team members was a strength that had the potential to improve the overall quality of the project (Wu & Cormican, 2021). We agreed that the project should be approached from a multidisciplinary angle, considering theoretical and practical aspects. In addition, we agreed that our project would benefit from qualitative and quantitative research approaches.

Recommendations

Several recommendations were made regarding group formation. Some suggestions for how groups can deal with diversity and differences more effectively are to encourage open and honest communication, set shared goals and expectations, and value different points of view (Wu & Cormican, 2021). In addition, it is absolutely necessary to consider diversity as an advantage that can improve the performance of the group rather than a barrier that can prevent collaboration from occurring.

Communication was one of the difficulties that we as a group had to work with. We had a few communication breaks at the storming stage despite establishing communication routes during the forming stage. Some participants did not reply to emails in a timely manner, causing the activities associated with the project to be delayed. In addition, certain members of the organization did not actively engage in the meetings, which hampered our ability to make headway.

To overcome this difficulty, we devised a set of transparent communication rules that emphasized prompt and responsive communication. In addition to this, we set expectations for active engagement in the group and arranged recurring group meetings. These steps contributed to improving our communication, which in turn led to more productive project activities. On the other hand, we could have resolved this obstacle more productively if, at the stage of formation, we had established a communication plan that detailed communication expectations and channels. In addition, we could have swiftly addressed breakdowns in communication rather than waiting for them to snowball into more significant problems.

Conclusion

In conclusion, my experience working on a group project for a class was marked by multiple stages of group development and various group dynamics. At the storming stage, we had several disagreements, but we could work through them by communicating openly and honestly. The group’s decision-making procedures and approaches to problem-solving were impacted by the variety of our membership. Clear communication rules were established, and frequent group meetings were held in order to overcome the difficulties associated with communication.

On the other hand, we might have been able to manage these difficulties more successfully if we had developed a communication strategy at the planning stage and immediately addressed any communication breakdowns that occurred. I believe that the lessons acquired will be helpful for future work involving groups, as the overall experience with the group offered chances for personal development, learning, and collaboration among participants.
