Human Resource Management’s Role and Functions

Human resources (HR) is a term used to refer to the department within an organization that is tasked with handling all things that are associated with employees. According to Sengupta et al. (2021), HR functions include enlisting, screening, choosing, employing, onboarding, training, promoting, compensating, and sucking workers and other independent contractors. The department is also responsible for staying on top of the rules and regulations governing how employees are treated when they are hired, working, or being fired. From many business strategists’ perspectives, the HR department is the most crucial part of any organization. That is because the department helps workers attain new skills and thus increases a company’s competitive advantage over time. While the HR department is vital to the daily operations of any firm, this discussion will be focused on HR functions in healthcare organizations in the contemporary world.

In the modern world, HR management in healthcare plays a significant role in ensuring efficiency in the care of patients. The management requires healthcare professionals to navigate the ever-changing healthcare industry. Human resource managers are responsible for ensuring that the clinicians and the staff provide high-quality services to patients. In the healthcare industry, HR managers are also tasked with managing finances, retention and promotion of workers, and ensuring that health guidelines are followed. The HR managers aid health organizations in retaining employees by training them on how to adhere to health regulations and providing that all employees are up to date on their training. According to Sondhi (2018), human resource managers are responsible for conducting strategic management plans that align with an organization’s vision. These responsibilities include relationships or advocacy with workers, which is critical in determining the success of an organization (Sondhi, 2018). The human resource personnel is also responsible for strategizing with the healthcare administrators in the decision-making and planning process involved in the daily operations of a healthcare institution.

The human resource department is tasked with helping managers in their roles. This department carries out five essential functions to ensure its employees have the necessary skills and knowledge when conducting their jobs. These basic functions include:

  1. Personnel management – This is defined as the administration specialization focused on recruiting and developing workers and ensuring that they become valuable components of a health organization. HR managers in the healthcare industry strive to ensure that they select the best applicants for job opportunities based on the knowledge and experience of the role description.
  2. Counselling Employees – This helps maintain and leverage workers’ essential capabilities. It also helps in establishing and developing an environment for learning.
  3. Performance Monitoring and Training – Employees’ performance evaluation is a continuous process. The assessment helps determine how the workers perform and examines areas that should be improved (Gonzalez, 2022). HR managers in the healthcare industry are tasked with the duty of assessing employee performances in healthcare facilities and in providing them with the required training to help them improve in their duties.
  4. Compensation – The department is tasked with determining the amount that should be paid to healthcare organization workers and ensuring that they are fully compensated.
  5. Planning – Planning is crucial in establishing an organization’s goals and the steps that should be followed to attain them. The department is responsible for planning the goals of both employees and the organization and ensuring that these goals are met.

In all HR management roles, personnel management is the most crucial function. Although all HR functions are vital, personnel management is superior since it helps ensure smooth operations within an organization. The role ensures that the best talents are hired and trained on the goals and visions of an institution. This training ensures that the employees remain committed to attaining the organization’s vision.
