Introduction
Most of the information about sexuality today tends to focus on the negative aspects of sex which includes diseases like HIV/ AIDS and sexual crimes such as rape; this portrays sex more risky than it is fulfilling (Miracle, Miracle and Baumester p.3).This paper explores human sexuality and how it’s related to the fulfillment of basic human needs classified into; physical, social, emotional, spiritual and cognitive needs.
Physical needs
This is an aspect of sexuality related to the need to procreate; human beings have an in born sense of giving rise to another human being. The biological aspect of sex is determined by hormones; in men the urge to have sex increases with build up of sperms which is in turn determined by the hormone testosterone while in women its determined by the hypothalamus and the female reproductive cycle. The understanding this aspect of sexuality has been shown to reduce stress, promote the immune system, and lower risk of some diseases which include heart arrest and cancer of the prostate(Miracle, Miracle and Baumester p.3).
Social needs
These are the tender feelings of trust and bonding that are experienced in a good sexual relationship and are promote by the hormone oxytocin. Just after a sexual fulfilling act human beings are automatically more affectionate and appreciative not only to their partner but also to other members of the society. Sexual frustrations are exhibited as social anxiety and poor relationships with people.
Emotional Needs
Sexual fulfillment helps human being to feel desired or wanted. A wide range of emotions are experienced in a good sexual relationship which include happiness, joyfulness and excitement on the other hand being rejected by a sexual partner leads to anger, sadness and frustrations’’ (Miracle, Miracle and Baumester p.3). Being intimate promotes a positive self image, the ability to satisfy a partner sexually is central to an adult human being confidence so much that it is replicated in all aspects of their life. A good understanding of these emotional needs can help to face the daily challenges of life with more courage.
Spiritual need
Spirituality is the belief in the higher being or the super natural. This higher being prescribes codes for sexual involvement. Human beings are constantly struggling to control their strong sexual desires and have a strong fear to fall to these urges; in essence the war is over truth that is right or wrong. Falling to sexual temptation is associated with guilt and shame of having failed the almighty’’.This failure is expressed as lack of belief and trust in all other aspects of life(Miracle, Miracle and Baumester p.3).
Cognitive needs
Cognitive need is the urge to be reassured about everyday life and the need to have someone to help in times of challenges. The I.Q of a sexually fulfilled person is higher and has an improved ability to solve everyday problems in a better and sharper way.
Increased awareness and fulfillment of sexual needs improves all levels of human life; physical, social, emotional, spiritual and cognitive.
