Overview and Description of the Disorder
The pathological condition of iron deficiency anemia, caused by a lack of iron in the body, occurs as a result of a low concentration of hemoglobin and red blood cells in the blood. With a long-term lack of iron, its reserves are depleted, which can lead to iron deficiency anemia (Sargsyan, 2020). An improper or unbalanced diet is one of the most common causes of iron deficiency, with the subsequent development of anemia.
Signs and Symptoms
The anemic nature of the symptoms of iron deficiency anemia is accompanied by a drop in hemoglobin levels and is manifested by general weakness, fatigue, tinnitus, and dizziness. With severe anemia, a feeling of lack of air, shortness of breath, and a rapid heartbeat. In rare cases, fainting and impaired consciousness are possible (Sargsyan, 2020).
The other characteristic of iron deficiency in many body tissues is manifested by dry skin, peeling of the skin, brittle hair, and more (Sargsyan, 2020). Thus, iron deficiency anemia is a blood disease with numerous symptoms that can be grouped into two distinct groups.
Available Treatments
A doctor prescribes treatment for iron deficiency anemia after an examination. It includes a balanced diet and therapy for the disease or condition that led to the development of iron deficiency. In addition, in treating anemia, it is important to replenish iron stores in the body, which can be done through nutrition or drug intervention. Lack of timely treatment can lead to serious complications in any population group (Sargsyan, 2020).
Effects Across Age Groups and Racial Populations
However, iron deficiency anemia is most dangerous for pregnant women and children under 6 years old (Mantadakis, 2020). For pregnant women, iron deficiency anemia is risky due to a change in the tone of the uterus muscles and a delay in the development of the fetus (Mantadakis, 2020). Even a mild but prolonged form of anemia can adversely affect a child’s mental and physical development.
