James Earl Jones’ Vocal Attributes

In this paper, the following attributes should be taken into account and assumed, including examples illustrating how these characteristics can be expressed in a positive and negative light. First of all, the best way to “present” a pitch is to cover an octave and four notes above the middle and four notes below; otherwise, a person’s speech risks being boring and monotonous. Hence, the monotonous speech of a speaker on stage is a sign of a “negative” pitch. In contrast, liveliness, brightness in oration, and interest in an audience with the help of correct pitch are expressed as positive elements.

Secondly, volume is a subjective concept that should be constantly changed and adjusted. For example, it is considered a positive property if politicians flexibly vary their voice during the speech, achieving expressiveness and diversity. On the contrary, it will be harmful if they speak quietly into a microphone because an audience is unlikely to make out the words spoken. Moreover, if politicians talk louder than required, they will violate the etiquette norm, forcing people to listen.

Thirdly, the pace is usually defined as the number of sound units uttered per unit of time. For instance, a radio host’s excessively slow or too accelerated speech stream on the air blocks listeners’ competent perception of spoken words. As a rule, people start to get angry at such listening speeds and feel some pressure. Accordingly, if the pace has some “golden mean,” and words are legible and understandable, this is already an optimistic characteristic.

Fourthly, models of good articulation can serve as songs by Steve Tyler or Linda Perry, where the active work of all speech organs is visible. Vowel sounds are lengthened, and consonants are reduced, but they sound extremely clear and precise. Accordingly, an incorrect and negative example of articulation will be when singers barely move their lips and pull consonant sounds with the wrong mouth position.

Moreover, a public figure who, in my opinion, has an exceptional, memorable, and unique voice is James Earl Jones. In my opinion, with the help of a well-chosen pace of speech, a high and deep sounding tone, and a measured pace, Jones’ Darth Vader becomes a cunning, cruel and merciless leader (The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2022). Indeed, James’ voice is one of the most memorable in show business, and his basso profondo gives the speeches of movie characters an unusual seriousness and expressiveness.
