The phrase “Lost Decades” refers to a prolonged period of stagnation and economic decline, accompanied by significant social and cultural shifts. This essay examines the social and economic norms prevalent during the “Lost Decades” and their underlying causes and impacts, including decreased birth rates and productivity, as well as the emergence of the hikikomori culture. The study employs a qualitative research methodology, primarily drawing on a thorough analysis of academic literature, statistical information, and policy reports.
The asset price bubble bust, demographic shifts, and structural problems in the Japanese economy were among the interconnected factors that contributed to the “Lost Decades.” These causes, including declining birth rates, workforce aging, and the growth of the hikikomori phenomenon, characterized by social withdrawal and isolation, have had a profound impact on Japan’s social and cultural fabric.
