Introduction
It is possible to find numerous examples of movies interacting with LGBT discourse. Many experimental movies contain elements of queer aesthetics, which undermine conventional understandings of gender, sexuality, and identity by challenging norms and establishing alternatives, and these tendencies have been present throughout history (Obermayr, 2020; Loveday, 2019; Crow, 2024). Kenneth Anger and Jack Smith are two film directors working in this genre, and both can be regarded as pioneering filmmakers associated with the queer worldview (Gaffney, 2022). Their bold views have had a lasting impact on the fashion and film industries due to the innovative character of the ideas they promote (Brown, 2019; Brenez & Fendt, 2023).
Specifically, their work has influenced fashion trends and even crossed over into modern movies today. As a result, a specific and typically symbiotic relationship between style and film develops (Braun, 2020). It allows stating that the movies by Kenneth Anger and Jack Smith had a significant impact on the fashion industry, as they represent queer culture and worldview, normalizing and making them an integral part of the cultural context.
Queer Experimental Film
Radicalized artistic expression characterizes queer experimental films. Their style embraces marginalized perspectives and is deemed disruptive of conventional cinematic conventions (Ellis, 2023; Freibert, 2022; Fox, 2020; Fox, 2022). The movies have examined the different facets of identity, desire, and embodiment, often challenging the prevailing narratives that constitute the dominant culture (Wolff, 2022). Diverse perspectives are represented within the industry, encompassing topics associated with eroticism, gender performativity, and the ongoing subversion that characterizes the genre (Zimmerman, 2022; Green, 2022). In this way, the topics have compelled many people to begin challenging conventional conceptions and simultaneously accepting the flexibility of identity.
The investigation of non-normative identities and sexualities is a defining characteristic of queer experimental film. Analysis of Kenneth Anger’s work illustrates how homoerotic impulses are used in the film “Fireworks” and how conflicts with various forms of societal oppression develop (Windhausen, 2023). Jack Smith’s film “Flaming Creatures” likewise features a fluid representation of sexuality that challenges many of the time’s standards and traditions (Windhausen, 2023). As a result, these movies have emphasized theatrical viewpoints, employing vibrant colors and ornate settings that perfectly capture the style in which they present these ideas to the audience (Roche, 2022). It is left to the viewer to decide what is real and what is a blur, which some would call imagination.

It typically employs various narrative devices and visual tactics to undermine normative representations of gender and sexuality (Nagib, 2020; Manning, 2020). In the queer experimental film industry, directors have persisted in transforming bizarre imagery into disjointed narrative segments that employ formal innovations to subvert traditional storytelling paradigms, thereby emphasizing protest against dominant heteronormativity (Hjort & Jørholt, 2019; Fischer, 2019). The filmmakers of these movies have also gone above and beyond by providing alternative forms of representation that preserve the authenticity of queer-related fashion imagery (Haagensen-Løkke, 2023).
For example, their films feature dreamy scenes and non-linear plots that incorporate symbolic imagery (Ryzhenko, 2022). These settings produce a dizzying effect that reflects the film’s ambiguity, a characteristic of independent queer cinema (Reeser, 2022; James, 2020; Erhart, 2020; Hand & O’Thomas, 2024). These assumptions suggest that the primary goal of these kinds of movies is to persuade audiences to interact with them more viscerally and emotionally.
Additionally, the idea of artistic exploration is central to queer experimental films. To create vivid and engaging cinema experiences, directors constantly push the boundaries of conventional filmmaking methods that have become typical in independent queer cinema (Bradbury-Rance, 2019; Baer, 2021; Anselmo, 2023). They have employed various aesthetic techniques to produce these movies, including avant-garde editing, inventive sound design, and well-known nontraditional camera angles (Batori, 2024; Arrow & Woollacott, 2019; McGarry et al., 2020). The current linear narratives are still being disrupted by these variables, which have been described as challenging viewers’ expectations of reality and identity formation (McSweeney, 2020; Royer, 2019). Therefore, by placing more emphasis on form than story, it would be possible to explain the themes in greater detail while allowing viewers to interpret the work in many ways.
Jack Smith and Kenneth Anger’s Work
Jack Smith and Kenneth Anger are influential figures in queer experimental filmmaking. Their visionary efforts attest to their having made unique contributions to the discussed genre. For instance, Kenneth Anger is known for making films that are thought-provoking and fantastical. They fall into categories of mythology, ritual, and human desire (Cambier, 2022).
Anger also takes advantage of the different vivid color schemes, fusing them with the captivating image. Anger also uses mesmerizing landscapes that highlight a beauty most likely from another planet (Cantoral, 2020). By combining these ideas and scenes with themes related to the queer worldview, the viewer’s perception is transported to a magical world, creating a credible, ideal, but imaginary world (Parsons, 2021; Valente, 2022; Lelli, 2022). What is regarded as reality and what others might call a fantasy blur together in her movies.
Since Anger created several of his works during a period when homosexuality was outlawed in the US, he received criticism from the public for some of them. Though it only adds revolutionary character to these films that were opposed to the dominant cultural discourse (Deegan, 2023). His works, “Fireworks” and “Scorpio Rising,” break the conventions of moviemaking at the time and popular culture aesthetics, as they are produced in a completely original manner (Jenzen, 2020).
The director’s primary goal in making these films at the time was to create a poetic structure that graphically accentuated the stories of the traditional ideas about masculinity and desire. As a result of the director’s unwavering curiosity about the nature of LGBT eroticism and passion, Anger finds himself breaking several well-known social taboos and challenging the audience to reconsider some harsh facts of life (Day, 2020). The director does this to get viewers to reevaluate some of the stereotypes about identity and sexuality that they were raised with (Peng, 2019; Stehle & Weber, 2020; Weinstock, 2020). Most of the movies he made are striking illustrations of the revolution he brought to the film industry, offering audiences what seemed like a peek into the dark corners of the human mind.
Similarly, Jack Smith creates experimental movies that question accepted notions of gender and sexuality. Smith fully embraces the spirit of queer life that he represents in his movies, making it the central point that unites the aesthetics of his works (Popa, 2021; Mayer, 2022). The idea of this celebration inspires others to come out in response to his creation of these kinds of films. It gives pride to the revolutionary potential of gay identity.
One of his most famous movies, “Flaming Creatures,” is a potent testament to his ability to persevere in performance art and his aesthetic vision. He combines several themes to persuade the audience of his story about queer identity (Herbert, 2024). Some aspects include surrealism and drag culture, which give the audience a thought-provoking moviegoing experience and break stereotypes (Burchiellaro, 2023; Burns, 2023). The visually spectacular scenes highlighted the potential of LGBT filmmaking as a whole (Hanich & Rossouw, 2023). Smith supports the oppressed people while also giving weight to the excesses, which typically represent a rejection of normative ideals (Meek, 2023). These examples show that the aesthetics and themes Smith incorporates into his movies differ from the heteronormative cultural discourse of his time.
Impact on Fashion and Contemporary Film
Jack Smith and Kenneth Anger profoundly impact the movie industry by discussing topics related to queer culture. Their works have been deeply and unexpectedly embedded in modern cultural outputs as a result of the expanding influence and shift in sentiment that the majority of viewers have experienced (Athey, 2020; Bonah & Laukötter, 2020). The innovative aesthetics have inspired new generations of filmmakers and fashion designers while making their way from the catwalk to the big screen (Binns, 2021). As a result, they have influenced most people’s visual language regarding current cultural ideas, and these images have persisted over time.
The intersection of fashion and cinematic elements is a rich source for artistic exploration. As a result of their incorporation into cinematic references, filmmakers find a foundation in the fashion designers featured in these movies and the fashion industry (Edwards, 2020). The artistic merits of queer experimental films have attracted increasing attention throughout time (Curtis, 2020).
The topics above have been pursued in the field of fashion, wherein various designers have drawn inspiration from the provocative ideas investigated by Smith and Anger. The creation of dreamlike imagery that conveys concepts found in the real world is another area that has continued to fascinate manufacturers in the fashion industry (Hart, 2023; Hanich & Fairfax, 2019). Particular parallels may be found between Vivienne Westwood’s designs, a combination of gender-bending styles, and Alexander McQueen’s works, which draw on the theatrical runway (Clark & Rossi, 2020). These works have influenced the character of gay films, and this influence is evident in fashion aesthetics. The designers can question established standards of gender and attractiveness and develop a far more inclusive understanding of and taste for fashion by embracing aspects of queer culture.

The films of Kenneth Anger and Jack Smith significantly impacted both the fashion and film industries while shaping public opinion on queer culture. Their movies have questioned the prevailing narratives of the era, seeking to alter viewers’ perceptions of particular situations and individuals.
