Leadership and its Role in the Organizational Behavior

Leadership is considered to be one of the crucial parts of the successful development of any company. The necessity of the leader in the company is dictated by the core roles and aims of the leader: to inspire, to be the innovator, to be based on the perspective view of the issue, to push the development and to lead the company to the innovations and increase of productivity. The presence of the leader in the workplace influences people’s relations, which may be the supported by inspiration to the working process and the join of the collective in general.

Leadership is considered to be the determinant of the safety climate in the company environment. According to the theory, introduced by Julian Barling and Cary L. Cooper, the safety of the employers is influenced by the four types of leaders’ behavior – idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration (548). The researches on the issue showed that the working relations with powerful and respected leaders develop faster, the employees feel safe in different meanings of this word. First of all, employees are monitored and administrated, and they are protected from unexpected mistakes. Second, supervisors’ help “is effective in reducing workplace accidents and assists employees in coping with stress, which reduces the number of workplace accidents” (Barling, Kelloway and Frone 252). Furthermore, leadership assistance increases the level of safety in communication between employees. Moreover, a good leader is a guarantee of “trust in management, organizational commitment, and satisfaction with work performance” (Barling, Kelloway and Frone 252). So, the role of leadership may not be overvalued in the reference to the safety climate in the workplace.

Navarro is sure that leadership plays a key role in the organizational behavior of the company. The importance of leadership in organizational behavior is discussed in several categories: (1) individual process, which is the personal motivation, values and job satisfaction, (2) team and group level process, where leadership plays the crucial role, as in this category, the people interaction is mentioned, and (3) organizational process, as leadership influences the individual, the teamwork and the whole organizational culture in general (229). Effective leadership on all these levels and within all these groups guarantees the successful development of the whole organization. The leader is put in the place of the supervisor and the controlling person.

In general, it is impossible to disagree with Richard L. Daft and Dorothy Marcic’s statement that leaders’ “attitude and their ability to understand and shape the attitudes of employees, can profoundly affect the workplace and influence employee motivation, morale, and job performance” (372). The presence of the leader is crucial for the development of successful and trustful relations among employees in the collective. Moreover, to be effective and able to solve some problems without influencing the whole working process, any leader should be able to diagnose the problem, adapt individual behavior and provide communication that is understandable and acceptable to others.

In conclusion, the role of the leadership in the workplace is impossible to overvalue, as the whole organizational process is influenced by the leader’s attitude. The employees’ interconnection and their working abilities should be followed by the leader and timely actions should be provided with the aim not to interfere with the healthy working process.
