Leadership of a Priest: Interview Experience

Introduction

Leadership is required in all spheres where some people bear more responsibility to lead others. The choice of a specific behavioral model depends on the context and what qualities and skills a leader and subordinates have. I decided to interview a priest from a local church via Zoom to analyze his leadership. The priest is a local church leader, resulting in significant characteristic features. Numerous Christians attend this establishment to converse with God and find answers to their questions. These individuals require a person who can guide them in this environment, and the priest seems a suitable option. As a result, this leader is advantageous because followers reach him and ask for advice, guidance, and assistance.

Interview with a priest as a leader

It is now reasonable to present the peculiarities of the religious industry. This setting relies on values like faith, honesty, and love. Competition is not present in the environment since followers do not need to gain access to any limited resources here. This state of affairs correspondingly affects the priest’s leadership approach. His leading task is to promote the above values among his subordinates.

I can state that the priest relies on traits that are unusual among typical leaders in business environments. He is modest, excessively kind, and can perfectly control his thoughts and emotions. He shares the above values and explains that his leading goal is to help others. That is why the priest has high emotional intelligence, developed communication skills, and a willingness to assist others.

The information above allows for suggesting that the priest relies on servant leadership principles. This model stipulates that a leader’s principal requirement is to serve their subordinates. Such leaders often prioritize others’ needs and neglect their feelings to satisfy their followers’ needs and preferences. This leadership model is not popular in the business industry because it underestimates the role of a leader who is concerned with meeting others’ needs. However, the religious industry seems appropriate to implement this model.

Nevertheless, the priest is an effective leader because he manages to guide his followers. All people that come to the priest receive the required assistance and advice to respond to the issues that they face. The leader is also ready to help others and ensures that his thoughts and feelings do not hinder serving his followers, which characterizes a servant leader.

The priest stipulated that he did not have any development plans. His main priority was to master skills and abilities that allowed him to serve others and meet followers’ needs. As for the future, the priest indicated that he would like to ensure that he would keep implementing the servant leadership principles and guarantee that his actions would be guided by love, faith, and good.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the interview has demonstrated that not all leaders are the same. Servant leaders are peculiar, and this example reveals that this leadership approach can be effective under particular conditions. As for my future leadership opportunities, I do not think that I will imply this model. However, the knowledge obtained is beneficial because it helps me understand the role of a context and how leadership works.
