Murders During the Black Lives Matter Protests: The Case Study

The article describes the trial of a young man who shot and killed two people last year during the Black Lives Matter protests. Notably, 18 years old Kyle Rittenhouse was acquitted in court despite fatally shooting two men and injuring one (BBC, 2021). A former police youth cadet, Kyle Rittenhouse, was charged with deliberate homicide, attempted murder, and a reckless safety threat following the shootings. Nonetheless, later, all charges were dropped based on the decision of the jury. In writing, President Joe Biden has informed that he is concerned about the court’s verdict, although he has previously claimed to support the jury in its decision. It is crucial to mention that Kyle Rittenhouse and the people he killed were white; nonetheless, the race problem had an impact on the case. Essentially, the shooting took place during the protests and was justified in court by alleged police brutality. Thus, the charges were dropped because the defendant claimed to have staged the shooting in self-defense.

It is essential to say that this case worried people as it testifies to injustice in the justice system. The court’s decision drew attention to the problem of inequality; a group of people gathered outside the courthouse with placards stating that there is no justice, no peace (BBC, 2021). Therefore, the trial and the Republicans’ reaction indicate deep racial divisions for many citizens and contribute to diversity studies by increasing awareness. Essentially, the law industry includes studying diversity issues, and it is also partially related to STEM fields because it is becoming highly tech-driven. To conclude, the article contributes to STEM fields by emphasizing the importance of diversity and equality in society.
