Mobilize, Assess, Plan, Implement, Track (MAP-IT)
The framework of MAP-IT proposed by Healthy People 2020 is a powerful tool to create a comprehensive care plan for the aggregate of Jewish population living in Miami. It seems appropriate to consider each of the elements in detail.
- Mobilize. To improve the contemporary situation, it is necessary to take collaborative actions that can be accomplished through meetings and conferences. First of all, specialized Jewish health care organizations, for example, Direct Nursing Care Services and Miami Jewish Home and Hospital for the Aged at Douglas Gardens are to be invited to join the project (“Florida Jewish”, 2017). At the same time, the local non-Jewish organizations should also be contacted and engaged in mobilization.
- Assess. The Jewish community is in need for equal treatment and access to health care services. Their cultural peculiarities such as the necessity of Kosher food are to be considered. The attention should primarily be paid to family issues and the standard of living.
- Plan. The paramount goal is to achieve the better standard of living and establish equal health care opportunities for Miami Jewish. To achieve the mentioned goal, it is necessary to increase awareness among nurses and patients, promote disease prevention, and ensure access to health care services.
- Implement. Healthy People 2020 initiative may be applied to accomplish the plan through Nursing Home Care and Health Systems.
- Track. Progress tracking should be maintained on a regular basis by means of surveys, examinations, and questionnaires.
Priority Nursing Diagnosis
The key nursing diagnosis that can be suggested on the basis of the relevant literature observation is health promotion, in particular, health awareness and health management (Kourkouta & Papathanasiou, 2014). At this point, health behavior and health perception are to be improved in terms of nursing education and communication. The analysis of the aggregate revealed that there is a need for understanding Miami Jewish community issues in an in-depth manner, penetrating into their concerns and expectations. Furthermore, the readiness of the population to change should be properly measured and improved, if required. The role of a nurse is to show stakeholders that health care services are to be easily accessible and comprehensive so that the ethnical minorities feel comfortable while they are in need for treatment and disease prevention.
Strategies to Address Nursing Diagnosis and Risks of Aggregate
Taking into account that there is a need for considering cultural specifics of the target population, it is essential to offer culture-focused strategies. For example, Verhagen, Steunenberg, Wit, and Ros (2014) state that “culturally sensitive interventions such as the introduction of community health workers (CHWs) have been used to address health disparities among ethnic minorities” (p. 1). This measure would improve access to health care services for the elderly population that compose the majority of the community. It is also important to ensure navigation among health care opportunities to help people understand their rights and receive the best care possible.
Communication plays a great role in enhancing health care delivery standards. The successful outcome of the intervention directly depends on nurses’ performance and their communication competencies. According to Kourkouta and Papathanasiou (2014), “the patient should feel comfortable with the nurse, but the latter should protect his/her prestige and not give rise to misunderstandings” (p. 66). Honesty and equal treatment are the two factors that ensure adequate communication and allow achieving the goals that were mentioned above. Building appropriate relationships between health care representatives and patients and between family members is likely to cause the increased awareness of health issues of Miami Jewish population and, as a result, their effective resolution. Thus, it is necessary to develop a dialogue between all the stakeholders of the plan.
Disaster Management Plan
In case of such disaster as hurricane, MAP-IT framework may be applied to address the occurred challenges. First, mobilization of the existing resources would allow using health care facilities and tools to evaluate the disaster, including its current effects and potential consequences. After planning the evacuation and assessing risks, Miami Jewish Health Systems – residential living may be contacted to relocate people from their housings and provide necessary emergency care. After that, the on-going monitoring of health statuses of patients should be established to identify change and improve nursing care.
Another disaster is earthquake that can be addressed by applying Jewish Emergency Management Plan Victoria that involves prevention, mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery phases (“Jewish Emergency Management Plan Victoria”, n.d.). This tool may also be used as an additional option to MAP-IT framework in the role of guidance for disaster management planning and implementation. It should also be noted that the described decision would allow integrating the work of several organizations, including Jewish communal resources and infrastructure and Kosher food suppliers that are indispensable for Jewish community cultural specifics. Furthermore, the religious counselling should be organized, and its accessibility is to be ensured as it is a rather important element of the target population. In general, disaster management plan should be comprehensive, timely, and culture-sensitive to address the needs of Miami Jewish community.
