Nurture vs Nature: The Dominant Role of Environment in Shaping Personality

Introduction

A significant number of factors influence people’s lives in different ways. Two main points have the most valuable and considerable impact. This essay will explore the influence that such factors as nature and nurture have on the person. In particular, it will be stated that nurture can dramatically prevail over nature in forming a person’s personality. The main reasons for the significant impact of nurture on the person are its lifelong presence and the ability to change even physical states and diagnoses.

Avoiding Psychological Issues Due to Nurture

Another significant advantage of nurturing personality development is the opportunity for the person to avoid even physiological issues. It is essential to state that the external environment influences people in many ways and can change their behavior and thinking (McLeod 1). As evidence, one should highlight the case of Mr. James Fallon, who discovered late in his life that he has the brain of a psychopath (GoodTherapy). Remarkably, his communication with people during his entire life allowed him to develop himself normally and think like an entirely healthy person without any health disorders (GoodTherapy). This fact confirms nurture’s extraordinary power in forming people’s characters, personalities, and mental characteristics.

The Negative Factor of the Nurturing Prevalence Over Nature

It is vital to stress that this may be crucial in developing a person’s personality and life perception. However, this process has a negative side, which also influences one more profoundly than nature (Sravanti 1). For example, according to GoodTherapy, some specific factors of nurturing that can negatively form mental health issues are “life events and experiences, such as childhood bullying, abuse, or other trauma” (2).

Moreover, it is noteworthy that the difference between nature and nurture is that the latter happens with the person throughout their life (Nesterak 2). A surprising number of events, people, hardships, and happy moments form the personality daily. Therefore, these factors highlight the much higher impact of nurture than nature.

Conclusion

In conclusion, it is necessary to restate that the ability of nurture to impact a person can spread even to physical characteristics. This means external events and people can prevail over nature and form personality and mental issues. However, it is remarkable that this process has a negative side, which can cause traumas and mental problems because of such negative experiences as bullying and abuse.
