In his writing titled On Care of Our Common Home, Pope Francis contends that the evils and sources of suffering are part of labor that he uses to gain humans’ cooperation with Him. With the gospel of God’s love for all His creatures, the question then beckons; why would God allow pain and suffering on His beloved creation? (Pope Francis, 2020). The story unravels the causes and reasons for human suffering while encouraging them to care for their planet.
Pope Francis proposes the importance of all creation in advocating for a balanced functionality. This balancing requires the mammals and birds seen and the worms, insects, fungi, and many invisible microorganisms to live in harmony. He further asserts that catechism teaches that “God wills the interdependence of creature” (Pope Francis, 2020, p. 60). The spectacle of the many diversities and inequalities in the ecosystem tells us that no creature is self-sufficient, emphasizing the need for cooperation (Pope, 2020). Consequently, this indicates that creation dwells purely in interdependence, serving each other, and completing each other. The specificity and balance in creation makes one wonder, is this achievable through evolution as the scientist proposes, or did God plan all this for the sustainability of the creation?
