Orlando Community Assessment: History, Demographics, Governance & Civic Life

Historic Overview

The chosen community for the assessment is Orlando, Florida. The information used for the report was obtained from the city’s website (https://www.orlando.gov/Home) and official demographic data. The first settlers in Orlando created the community in 1843, and the town was finally established in 1885 (“City of Orlando,” 2024). The community was founded by Aaron Jernigan, the city’s first settler, whose family played a significant role in Orlando’s development (“City of Orlando,” 2024). Notable events in Orlando’s history include the area’s early history, marked by Indian removal and subsequent development by white colonists. Orlando is now an economically developed metropolitan area with a thriving tourism industry.

Demographics and City Governance

Orlando’s demographic is constantly growing, a sign of the city’s development. The current population is 2,509,831 people, which is the center of the larger metropolitan area (“City of Orlando,” 2024). The population changes over time due to migration and internal demographic processes, and the statistics show that population growth is stable.

The community is famous for its tolerant attitude towards diverse populations. According to the estimates, almost 75% of the population are native English speakers, and nearly 17% of city residents speak Spanish as their first language (“City of Orlando,” 2024). There are also groups of people who speak Portuguese, Haitian Creole, and Arabic (“City of Orlando,” 2024). Orlando’s culture is diverse, and it can be described as a blend of purely American traditions and those of ethnic minorities. The number of languages spoken in the community supports the idea that people enjoy celebrations typical of their diverse cultures.

The racial and ethnic composition of Orlando is also diverse, and this tendency is enhanced. According to the estimates, almost 34% of the population is white, and approximately 29% are African American (“City of Orlando,” 2024). 4.22% are Asian, 33% are Latino, 0.15% are Native American, 1.27% are in other unspecified ethnic categories, and 5.14% are multiracial (“City of Orlando,” 2024). It is possible to say that there have been changes over the years towards greater inclusivity and diversity.

Civic and Social Domains

The current mayor is Buddy Dyer, who has served since 2003 (Tracy, 2023). The alderpersons are Jim Gray (R), Tony Ortiz (R), Robert Stuart (D), Patty Sheehan (D), Regina Hill (D), and Bakari F. Burns (D). The chief of police is Eric D. Smith, who has held various leadership positions since 1994 (Tracy, 2023). One prominent, outspoken community leader is Jerry Demings, the Orange County Mayor (Tracy, 2023). He is the first African American to hold this position and has achieved significant results in crisis management (Tracy, 2023). This was especially evident during Hurricane Ian, which devastated the region in 2022.

The characteristics the leader in my community requires are the ability to coordinate various processes and to take initiative. I assume the leader in the community is not always the person with official governing status. Even though the mayor has authority in the community, there are also cultural and spiritual leaders. For instance, in the Christian community, the religious leader is the pastor, and his congregation recognizes his authority.

Cultural and Religious Domains

As mentioned, Orlando has a high level of diversity and tolerance, evident in its religious and cultural spheres. For instance, there are representatives of various religious congregations in the city. Christian, Muslim, and Jewish communities support people who share their cultural and religious backgrounds (“City of Orlando,” 2024). There is also the numerous LGBTQ+ community in Orlando, which suggests active engagement (“City of Orlando,” 2024). Therefore, the community resources and services available in Orlando are focused on the needs of the city’s residents.

My role in the community is similar to that of most people. I try to help people in my neighborhood who are experiencing problems and volunteer at the local church. My civic engagement focuses on assisting vulnerable populations, and I help low-income families materially and spiritually. I have lived in Orlando all my life and plan to be a city resident someday. I can best serve my community by integrating volunteering and social work into my professional activities.

Even though Orlando is an economically developed city, there are problems on the local community level. The characteristics of my community are the close interaction among its members and the inability to disregard the issues others experience. It is typical for a small regional community to have different social dynamics than a highly urbanized city center (Flores & Olcott, 2020). These aspects make my community unique by ensuring that vulnerable populations receive support from their neighbors and officials during emergencies.

The community and civic engagement opportunities are available to all city residents. For example, you can participate in a charity and volunteer as a social worker. My community is separated from the rest of the city by the neighborhood’s boundaries. In this community, everyone knows each other, creating a special connection between people (Flores & Olcott, 2020). Religious organization leaders typically oversee these processes and coordinate volunteers’ actions. As a result, significant grievances in decision-making stem from an inability to help all vulnerable populations in the community eliminate their problems and change their lives.

During the last several years, people in my community have helped several people find jobs and cope with chronic substance abuse. There are also efforts to assist older adults who cannot be completely autonomous and those who need community participation. The isolation of people who need help is a significant concern in Orlando and requires significant effort.

People in small local communities try to move forward to change this situation and establish closer connections among individuals. However, some obstacles prevent people from overcoming all these problems simultaneously. For instance, isolation is a common problem in contemporary urban communities, and not everyone is ready to participate in these efforts (Damore et al., 2021). Even individuals who need help can refuse to accept it because they perceive it as humiliating.

The Orlando community improves over time, allowing for discussion of positive changes. Individual actions to strengthen the community and motivate every person to participate are essential to this positive development. As a community member, I participate in the life of my neighborhood and am part of a church community.

It is vital to mention that law enforcement typically addresses the cases that are the natural consequences of low income, substance abuse, and lack of opportunities for social development (Muschert et al., 2020). Even though law enforcement officers and authorities do everything possible to control the situation in the community, there are still examples of violence, fraud, drug use, and other unlawful actions. It is possible to assume that if the community focuses on helping vulnerable populations with low income, chronic unemployment, and substance abuse, the number of law infringements will reduce significantly (Muschert et al., 2020). All community members will benefit from this program’s development. It will be relevant because there is a significant concern about vulnerable populations in Orlando.
