Physical Educators: Career Changes

Introduction

Physical educators usually experience various difficulties in their work; this research is aimed at investigating the various reasons why physical educators are opting for career change. This research used various methods of collecting data such as interviews where they were properly evaluated. Many of the people interviewed were teachers who are experienced in this field, they emphasized on the many problems they usually encounter: for example physical injuries and conditions of work. Some of the experienced teachers shifted to administrative roles where they cited new challenges as a factor to career change. This research shows that the younger and older teachers change careers because of job precariousness as well as pursuit for better paying jobs.

Physical education involves both body and mental fitness; this is achieved through rigorous exercise. The exercise is conducted with the help of an instructor who is qualified and certified as a physical educator. Physical education is mostly practiced in learning institutions, in these institutions students exercise in order to counter stress and they usually have a brief moment outside the class room environment (Sandmark, p. 67). Through such activities students are able to learn how to work as a group and also improve on their individual tactics. Physical education has enabled many people to acknowledge their talents thus helping them capitalize on the same, which later becomes a way of earning their daily bread.

Reasons for Career Change

Physical educators are involved in physical work as much as the trainee is, thus making this job to be very tiresome and injurious. Due to the high energy involved in this career physical educators have become prone to injuries such as shoulder disorder, knee injuries and lower back pains (Sandmark, p. 10). Such problems may compel them to seek earlier retirements or change of careers.

Physical educators feel left out by the governments they argue that they do not get administrative support from such an institution. This perception is there because many state or provincial governments do not realize the importance of physical education in schools thus ending up not supporting the same. For example one of the interviewees in this research was quoted saying that,” more and more, we are seeing a problem of sedentarity in our youths. I realize that it’s getting harder to motivate the students”, such frustrations lead to career change.

Most of the experienced physical educators cite poor work conditions, for example administrative factors and limited time in teaching classes. The discipline of the students was also a factor, which frustrates the physical education teachers. Some young physical educators usually change careers because of the job insecurity involved of the same.

A career in physical education is very expensive, since it requires buying of modern training equipments for instance, if one is conducting a private training session. These expenses become too much for the educators and they opt for other careers, which might be less costly to conduct (Sandmark, p. 107).

Impacts of Career Change

A career change has it merits and demerits, and should any one venture in another career he/she is bound to way the same. It always becomes very difficult to cope with the new environment and also the employees should one decide to switch careers (Sandmark, p. 77). It is important to note that switching of careers leads to changes in living standards, hence finding it difficult to adapt to such styles of living.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the reasons of this study were to highlight the factors which predispose career change. Many physical educators cited the injuries involved in this work and the amount of energy used, as some of the reasons of career change.

It is also important to note that the current generation is now engaged in other time consuming activities and thus shying away from physical training sessions. The development of technology is also making the physical educators irrelevant, since people would prefer to embrace the new found technology, rather than depend on the archaic ways of doing it.
