Promoting Mental Health Education and Support in High Schools

Introduction

The Importance of Mental Health Education in High Schools

Because of the frequency of mental health difficulties among high school students, every high school should promote mental health education. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (n.d., para. 3), one in every five children aged 13 to 18 has or will have a serious mental illness. Many students are likely to be directly or indirectly affected by mental health issues.

High school kids’ academic performance, attendance, and conduct can all suffer as a result of mental health issues. Canenguez et al. (2022) discovered that school-based mental health treatments can improve academic achievement, reduce absences, and reduce punishment rates among children. It is critical to give mental health assets and support to ensure that young people receive the necessary assistance, that the stigma associated with mental illness is reduced, and that their mental well-being is prioritized.

Implementing School-Based Mental Health Resources and Support

As a result, schools ought to offer mental health resources and support, such as counseling services and mental health activities, to guarantee that students receive the assistance they require. By offering tools and assistance and creating a more welcoming environment, we can assist students in prioritising their mental health and lessening the negative perceptions surrounding mental health conditions.

It is past time for schools to acknowledge that mental health is equally as essential as physical fitness, and we must establish a more caring and inclusive school atmosphere that promotes all kids’ mental health.
