The story of Love Canal is one of the vivid examples. Love Canal was a small settlement not far from Niagara Falls. In the 1970s, the incidence of cancer diseases increased drastically among residents. Besides, many children were born with various birth defects.
It turned out that thirty years earlier, the company Hooker Chemical began dumping industrial waste in the canal. In 1953, the company sold the land, and the new school was built on that place. A few years later, the whole building crumbled, and the disaster was revealed (Moss, 2010).
