Social Exchange Theory and Abortion Legalization

Nowadays, in many countries, abortion legalization is “frozen” intentionally because of the conflict of interests. On the one hand, politicians want to increase their social rating by providing populist measures of birth rate increasing among developed countries’ citizens. On the other hand, there is a dilemma that states whether to save a child’s life and decrease the overall level of living and refuse to give birth to the child to pursue career growth and gain financial freedom. The main question of social exchange theory is that it is crucial to define the main benefits and drawbacks that specific measure brings to society, and only the overall society interests matter when examining the character of the issue.

First and foremost, the social exchange theory needs the exact model of considering some measures: the benefits and risks when bringing the final decision. Due to the social exchange theory, the model is developed on the notion that all individuals should possess the right to choose their future vector of life (Wan et al., 2020). In addition, some people may claim that the person should not take all the decisions. However, from the other perspective, it is the individual right to make anything they want and cope with the consequences of the taken decision. As a result, abortion legalization may be applied by implementing another perspective on personal responsibility after making an important decision. To be more specific, it is the couple who should decide the future of their child. From this perspective, all the benefits and risks are replaced by the couple and not the government. While some couples might take the wrong decision in the retrospective, the average and overall result for the society will be positive due to the inclusivity of rights when choosing the future vector of a couple’s life. I will definitely take this measurement, and when considering another decision-making system, such as decision-making theory. While the risk of having financial issues influences individuals, they will be more likely to refuse to give birth to a child because of the possible losses in the future.

Overall, abortion legalization should be taken due to the social exchange theory and decision-making theory. From society’s point of view, this measurement will bring inclusivity in deciding the couple’s vector of future life development. Moreover, the risks of taking the excess responsibilities are outperformed by the possible advantages of taking such measurements.
