Nowadays, a number of care homes for people with different needs and expectations could be found. Modern UK residential care homes, independent hospitals, and various nursing homes aim at providing support and care for older people, who cannot have a kind of positive life because of some crisis or instabilities (National Institute for Health and Care Excellence 2). Social policies such as the Care Standards Act 2000 and the Adult Social Care Outcomes Framework ensure the safe promotion of care, reduce the presence of medical, organisational, or behavioural errors, and support the idea of all citizens’ wellbeing will be investigated to comprehend their possible impact on workers and service users in older people care homes.
To provide appropriate services and create good conditions for living, the workers of older people care homes have to do much work and follow the standards and policies defined by the government. One of the main tasks is the recognition of the existing policies. For example, the Care Standards Act 2000 is a well-known UK policy that defines the essence of a care home as the place with “accommodation, together with nursing or personal care” (Care Standards Act 2000 3). This policy helps to define the possible users of services at care homes, including ill people, people with disabilities or mental disorder, or people who have alcohol or drug dependence. Besides, the age of the users should be properly defined. The Adult Social Care Outcomes Framework is another type of policy that regulates the conditions under which local interventions to improve the outcomes of care could be defined. This social policy underlines that there are many vulnerable people who are in need of care and professional support for a certain period of time. The satisfaction of people who use care services should be put in the first place (Department of Health 5). These two social policies provide older people with guarantees and support that they could address a local organisation when they feel that additional help is required in their lives.
The same policies also influence workers who provide older people with care. In 2010, the Minister for Pensions underlined the importance to help older people to avoid the possible effects of loneliness and social isolation (Department for Work & Pension para. 23). Regarding such requirements and federal support, workers of older people care homes have to understand their duties and be ready to combine their professionalism with a number of behavioural attributes. For example, workers have to demonstrate their compassion and readiness to listen. At the same time, workers should remember about their direct duties and make sure that all service users are in safe. A number of professional and ethical standards could not be neglected, and social policies help workers to understand the worth of care homes for older people.
In general, social policies impact workers and service users in a variety of ways and help them to comprehend the essence of care homes and the importance of professional care and support. The Care Standards Act 2000 and the Adult Social Care Outcomes Framework are the policies that prove that the government develops the standards and requirements for older people care homes to make sure workers understand their duties and meet expectations of service users, and service users know what they can ask when they address some older people residential home.
