I will be talking about the aspects of Spanish cuisine as a cultural element and its role in Spanish cinema. I want to highlight why Spaniards’ food preferences are part of the national identity, how much eating habits may tell about people, why utilizing cuisine is essential in the local cinema, what eating rituals the country’s residents adhere to, and how the country’s cuisine is popularized globally largely through cinema. In the cultural context, different aspects shape national identity and create a unique image of countries and their residents.
With regard to Spain, in addition to its centuries-old history and rich artistic heritage, one should take into account its cuisine as an essential element of national identity. Different peoples’ eating habits can tell much about the current social conditions of life, and when applied to Spaniards, their consistent food preferences and rituals are recognizable worldwide. Moreover, the national cuisine of this country is an aspect that is often reflected in the cinema, thereby popularizing Spanish dishes globally. Due to this genre of art, local food has gained prominence abroad and become a significant marker highlighting the uniqueness of Spaniards and their traditions. The unique image of Spain with its rich culture is largely revealed through cuisine and related food rituals promoted in the cinema.
Spanish Dishes as Semiotic Objects
I would like to refer to some theoretical reasoning to substantiate my ideas about the role of national cuisine. Particularly, I want to pay attention to semiotics as a science that studies sign systems as tools for conveying various contexts, including cultural and traditional peculiarities. Food preferences reflect the characteristics of specific communities, thereby highlighting their unique properties.
Within the framework of cinema, Spanish food has become not only an artistic marker but also a semiotic object that allows conveying specific images. In this scene from the movie “Viridiana,” the director used a popular biblical scene and applied the method of recognizing the world-famous religious story in which food played an important role. The symbolism of this approach is understandable to most viewers, and through this technique, filmmakers can convey appropriate messages by seeking to be remembered by the audience.
Due to the richness of the local cuisine, filmmakers have achieved the worldwide recognition of Spanish dishes, and the symbolism inherent in individual plot elements is often realized through the peculiarities of the national cuisine. The cultural context conveyed through Spaniards’ food preferences is a common method to reflect the local identity in a symbolic way, which, in turn, is a semiotic principle. Spanish cinema knows examples of movies in which some scenes reveal characters’ characteristics within the framework of food culture, for instance, specific traits. Metaphors can also be achieved due to the use of appropriate dishes, and in Spain, this technique has been used often since the middle of the last century. Here is the biblical metaphor in “Viridiana” – this is a prime example of how individual characters can be conveyed by reference to religious history and by drawing hidden parallels.

In this scene from the movie “Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown,” a 1988 Spanish black comedy film written and directed by Pedro Almodóvar, the director shows the character Marisa holding a blender with gazpacho. This dish often appears in the film and is a means to highlight tension. The character adds psychotropic substances to this soup, and any appearance of gazpacho in the frame is automatically associated with comical situations. Thus, I find this example convenient to present how one dish can form the context of the entire story.
One of the features of the reflection of the national Spanish cuisine in the cinema I would like to stress is the appeal to traditional rituals that the country’s residents promote. Spanish films often draw on local food as a plot element, and some of the scenes have become classics. Gazpacho, tortilla, and paella are common dishes, and through film coverage, many viewers around the world have learned about this food as the crucial component of the country’s national identity.
Its people adhere to rituals, which distinguishes Spaniards from many other nationalities and allows this factor to be realized in the cinema. Meal ritualization is an important cultural aspect that has helped filmmakers create a personalized image of Spain and use its local dishes as tools to create distinctive stories. Therefore, local residents’ food preferences have become the property of world culture and gained universal fame.

This trend originated in the middle of the 20th century, and initially, it had a political background. As a dictatorial country, Spain was a state with rich cultural traditions that, however, were not known globally. Nevertheless, the course toward the popularization of national identity aimed to strengthen civic consciousness and made it possible to create unique socio-cultural foundations, including in the field of food. As a result, filmmakers adopted this practice, which allowed spreading Spanish meal preferences globally and created a unique image of the country.
Ritualism, as one of the aspects of the national cuisine, has become an artistic technique utilized to reflect various situations, including comical, serious, and other vivid scenes. For example, a 1974 surrealist comedy and drama film “The Phantom of Liberty” by Luis Buñuel demonstrates a memorable scene in which people sit on toilets at the table. Such a context is a social satirical technique that pokes fun at the primitive needs of the rich and, at the same time reflects, the inherent relationship of food intake with social status.
Variety of Meals and Locations
I would like to pay attention to the image of Spain in cinema because, in addition to a rich cultural heritage, the country is known throughout the world largely due to the theme of the national cuisine. Moreover, I need to point out not only the general but also the local variety of food and beverages in the state. For instance, traditional dishes and wine in Catalonia differ from those in Andalusia, although the common dishes popularized in movies bring the regions closer together. The local cuisine attracts many tourists and visitors from all over the world, which, in addition to the pleasant climate and picturesque landscapes, makes the country a favorable local for filming.
This applies not only to classic films but also to modern movies. Local actors vary, which allows filmmakers to choose freely. When a character mentions Spanish food, the public perceives it as an integral part of the character’s image and identifies him or her with the national culture. As a result of such a supportive environment, Spanish cinema is recognized worldwide, and the country’s national food culture is in serious competition with other cuisines.
