Any medical institution must undergo specialized checks to obtain accreditation and continue working. This process is of particular value, as it directly affects the quality of healthcare and the level of well-being of the population. In the case under study, an example of Sunny Valley Medical Center was provided, which passed the accreditation procedure according to the standards of TJC or The Joint Commission. At the same time, there are also a CMS or The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services guidelines. This scientific paper aims to study these two approaches and bring their differences.
Thus, The Joint Commission (TJC) and The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) were created to ensure that medical organizations follow all the necessary federal rules and regulations. Consequently, they carry out checks that help to maintain the proper level of medical services and care for patients (Wadhera et al., 2020). This aspect is the main similarity of these two approaches and has significant positive consequences for patients and healthcare organizations in general. Moreover, TJC and CMS cover organizations that provide ambulatory and office-based surgery, mental healthcare, and nursing care center services, while, despite the presence of one goal, it is necessary to distinguish the differences between TJC and CNS services clearly.
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services guidelines become the basis for conducting compliance checks at the legislative and government level in relation to hospitals and clinics. Within the framework of this program, standards and necessary aspects are developed that must be present and observed in medical care facilities. Hence, The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services guidelines assume responsibility for the certification and accreditation of medical care and care organizations.
Further, consider TJC or The Joint Commission accreditation. This initiative implies the establishment of specific rules and points that all medical institutions must follow. The CMS standards become the basis for these regulatory aspects and surveys, which are also confirmed and correlated with federal requirements. Only after passing a full inspection can the hospital receive federal support in the form of Medicare or Medicaid compensation. In addition, TJC accreditation differs in that it has a time interval of three years, with exceptions for laboratory accreditation for a period of two years. Moreover, medical organizations must pay a fee for completing the survey.
Therefore, it can be said that CMS prevails over TJP accreditation, and if healthcare institutions have passed it, then they comply with both standards and guidelines. On the other hand, if a medical organization meets the requirements of The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services guidelines, this does not mean that it is also automatically accredited by The Joint Commission. The analyzed initiatives have a common task, providing the best medical care and care while differing in the level of significance.
A study was conducted on the performance of the community hospital called Mount Sinai South Nassau. The results of the analysis were far from satisfactory since the general assessment of the medical institution was one of five stars (“Mount Sinai South Nassau,” n.d.). This assessment includes indicators of how well the medical institution provides health services and follows standards. Furthermore, the assessment of the patient survey was also unsatisfactory, which was two stars out of five. This aspect included the experience of patients staying in this organization concerned with the attitude and professionalism of the nurse and doctors. Moreover, it showed a low level of favorable conditions and quality of the hospital environment.
