Individuals usually find themselves telling “little lies” at one time or another. Some lies are necessary as long as they don’t amount to breaking the law. Even a person who considers him or herself, to be honest, tells lies in certain situations. It is therefore a natural aspect that people cannot do without.
White lies save relationships. Sometimes, a white lie will save a hectic situation and in certain cases, telling a white lie to consume time reduces stress and helps one to work out the problem effectively. In some instances, a white lie will relieve a difficult situation or reassure a friend of our commitment and care. When a colleague tells a lie like “you deserved that promotion”, such a white lie may cheer up the person. In this case, the white lie takes care of the emotional feeling of friends when they feel depressed.
However, not all white lies work to our advantage or for the good of others. For instance, when one lies that he or she is five minutes away and ends up taking one hour, it creates a situation of mistrust, even though its immediate impact is a relief to the situation. In other cases, a simple white lie may be interpreted so deeply to change our friend’s line of thinking. This may eventually create conflict instead of saving the situation.
Many people think that telling a white lie does not amount to being dishonest. It is a natural way of tackling situations. Without white lies, society may not be able to deal with some of the days to day challenges that may seem small but have great impacts on our lives.
