The Bible Passage: The Finding of Moses

The Bible passage The Finding of Moses tells about a Levite woman giving birth to a child and then hiding him. After three months, she left him on the riverbank, and he was later found by the Pharaoh’s daughter. She, the mother’s sister, called one of the Hebrew women, and when the child’s mother came, she was told to nurse the child. The window panel represents that passage, and it is apparent who the three women are: the child’s mother is on the left, Pharaoh’s daughter is in the middle, and the maiden is on the right. The maiden pretends to be shocked and worried, whereas Pharaoh’s daughter orders the mother to nurse the child, pointing at him with her hand. The mother’s posture expresses that she is to fulfill the will of Pharaoh’s daughter. In comparison, the panel shows only the most significant part of the passage, yet it is represented accurately.

The Burning Bush tells about Moses noticing a burning bush that is not conceived by the fire, and in that bush, he meets God. He tells Moses that he knows about the suffering of his people because of how they are treated by Egyptians and orders Moses to lead them out of Egypt. God says that he will assist Moses and explains what he should tell to the Israelites’ elders and the Pharaoh. The window represents the scene of God talking to Moses. The burning bush with God appearing in it is in the upper left part of the window, and Moses is on the right. In comparison, the window does not lack details and even shows that Moses is taking off his sandals after being told to do so. Besides, he is shown hiding his face, as the passage mentions that he is afraid of looking at God.

Crossing the Red Sea is dedicated to Moses helping Israelites cross the sea by stretching his hand and God creating dry land in front of them to travel. They were chased by the Egyptian army, and therefore God told Moses to stretch his hand once again, and then the sea flowed back onto the Egyptians. Israelites crossed the sea and saw dead Egyptians on the shore, and after that, they believed in God. The window seems to represent the scene of the Israelites and Moses arriving at the seashore and seeing the bodies of Egyptians. The dead bodies are on the bottom, showing what was left of the Egyptian army. Moses is on the right, leading the Israelites, who are following him in the middle and on the left. God is shown in the upper part of the painting, watching his people.

Tablets of the Law tells how God gave Moses stone tablets with commandments to people. Meanwhile, Israelites brought Aaron gold that he molded into a golden calf and claimed it to be God who helped them flee from Egypt. They had a feast the next day where they ate and drank. God told Moses to come down to his people as they had become depraved. The window represents God talking to Moses while people are having a feast in front of the molten calf. Moses is on the upper left, God is in the upper middle, the molten calf is on the bottom, and the people having a feast are on the right. In comparison to the passage, it is not that clear what is happening in the window, yet the main figures seem to be represented.

Brazen Serpent is about how people started complaining during the long journey about food and water, and God punished them with serpents biting them. Then Moses prayed for God to forgive them, and God told him to make a bronze serpent and put it on a pole, so anyone that looked at him recovered. The window shows that Moses tells people to look at the serpent to heal and them being happy about it. In comparison, the window is more related to the outcome of the passage rather than the passage itself.
