The “Blood Quantum” Film by Jeff Barnaby

The 2019 film, brightly titled Blood Quantum, reflects many cultural moments related not only to Canadian culture and history but also the history and culture of all America. Cultural assimilation, super-aggressive and brutal absorption of resources, land, and living space by white settlers are the issues covered in Blood Quantum. The movie demonstrates these ideas in a simple image associated with Canadian culture and reflected in the events that took place in Canada in the past. It could be claimed that the bridge is the symbol of the connection between the reserve and the white world filled with zombies; this contributes to the themes of colonialism and violence against the indigenous people.

The image of the bridge often appears through the course of the movie, which signifies that it has a particular symbolic significance for the narrative of the featured work. The bridge represents an anchor between the film’s fictional events and the frightening reality of the Canadian past. Namely, it reflects the bloodshed of the pathway of the Canadians on their way to modern society with colonial roots. For example, there is a fragment in the movie depicting the white zombies moving across the bridge and bearing the human parts covered in blood with them (Barnaby). Thus, it might symbolize the invasion of the colonialists bringing all the mud and violence of Europe to the lands of the indigenous tribes. Hence, the bridge highlights the theme of brutal and exhausting expansion of the whites, lasting through the ages and continuing even in the setting of the apocalypse. Thus, the bridge is a valuable element of the whole narrative of Blood Quantum, connecting its idea to the brutal reality of the world.
