The Nature of Emotional intelligence

The term Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a widely accepted term which means the ability or a special and professed skill to make out, evaluate, and manage the emotions of one’s self, others and particular groups. There are three models of Emotional Intelligence. Ability EI Models, Mixed Models, and Trait Emotional Intelligence are the three significant models of EI. Traditional cognitive intelligence constitutes various intellectual abilities. People have emotional intelligence that can regulate dispositions, and motivate themselves in the state of aggravation. The web article entitled Emotional Intelligence and Life Success gives more accurate information about the relevance of emotional intelligence in day to day life. It says, “Emotional intelligence contributes to about 80 percent of the factors that predict life success.” (Emotional intelligence and life success, 2009, The element of emotional intelligence, para.1). Through recognition, self control, and effective communication one can make a healthy atmosphere both in his work place and in personal life. Keeping and maintaining good relationship in work place is the primary need of a person in a new work place. Using Emotional Intelligence, one can develop a solid emotional foundation which helps one to create healthy relations in both personal and official life. (Cherniss, 2000).

The use of emotional intelligence in all aspects of life

Emotional intelligence helps a person to maintain his character vibrant and it earns him a number of personal relations. But most of them find it a bit difficult to maintain it lively as it is a long term process. There lies the importance of emotional intelligence as it helps one to sustain his relations healthy and unique. In their journal article entitled Emotional Intelligence, Religiosity And Self-Efficacy As Predictors Of Psychological Well-Being Among Secondary School Adolescents In Ogbomoso, Nigeria, Adeyemo,.and Adeleye, A. T remark that; “Perhaps the reason why emotional intelligence though adopted as a relatively new concept, has always, even if largely unacknowledged, been a part of humanity.” (Adeyemo and Adeleye, 2008). No doubt it is a great skill and effective training will definitely mould one to develop a psychological foundation which gives emphasis to emotional intelligence. As emotional intelligence is not an inborn talent one has to focus on the effective practice which makes him intelligent emotionally. This idea gets recognition when the web article “Understand, prevent and resolve life’s challenges” supports it with the comment that: “Emotional intelligence isn’t something you’re born with – it’s learned. You can continue to learn and develop the skills of emotional intelligence throughout your life.” (Relationship help, 2008, How Does emotional intelligence help our relationship, para.3).

Emotional intelligence is a set of skills or abilities which helps one to establish strong relationships and deal effectively with problems concerned with relations. It includes both our own emotions and those of others and the proper management of it leads to a balanced behavior. Emotional intelligence is found beneficial in different types of relationships such as personal, familial, official, teacher-student, aged and youth. A balanced emotional intelligence makes the conversation smooth that is the essential requirement of a good relationship.

The use of emotional intelligence concepts in work life, home life, and personal life

Emotional intelligence in the work life is a much discussed topic and a subject for different studies. The implementation of emotional intelligence has an elite role in present day world and it is quite common that a modern man uses it effectively in his day to day activities. It has often been seen that emotional intelligence in work field is capable of improving its standard. The journal article entitled Increasing emotional intelligence in the workplace states that “A recent research project conducted by the Center for Creative Leadership found that the top three causes of leadership failure are related to EI deficits–or more specifically, the inability to handle change, the inability to work well in teams and the lack of interpersonal skills.” (Increasing emotional intelligence in the workplace, n.d).

A person in the work field should be aware of the importance of emotional intelligence. It is very clear that to be an emotionally intelligent manager or worker is not as easy as one thinks. It is not possible for everyone to acquire the ability of emotional intelligence nor can skills of emotional intelligence replace technical expertise, general analytical intelligence, specific competencies, or experience (Caruso, & Salovey, 2004, p. 13).

One can see that emotional intelligence may not be sufficient to aim success, but a person should also be accompanied with luck. Emotional intelligence has the ability to bring an overall change in one’s life. David R.Caurso et al make it clear when they say, “Any role you might be called upon to play in life can be enhanced when you apply emotional intelligence.” (Caruso, & Salovey, 2004, p. 194). Thus one can see emotional intelligence has a dominant influence in one’s work life.

Emotional intelligence in home life can do much in enhancing the pleasant atmosphere of families. Generally, emotional intelligence can be regarded as using one’s own and others’ emotions effectively for solving problems and living happily. (Kail, & Cavanaugh, 2008, p. 216). As one is sure of the fact that emotions are the centre of life, one can see its ability in molding one’s character and help him to perceive emotions accurately. It also includes regulating one’s emotions which have a predominant role in human life. Different studies have identified the people who are emotionally intelligent work satisfactorily in work place and also when they are at home. They shall be capable of keeping interpersonal relationships and to have greater self-esteem.

Emotional intelligence in personal life is so significant that it can bring changes in one’s personal life. Many reputed institutions of modern times arrange personal meetings to get the best emotional intelligence feedback. Such face to face meetings help the authorities of institutions to properly understand the quality of their candidates. Thus, one can infer that emotional intelligence has a vital role in one’s work life, home life and personal life.
