During this time, most people called the Philippine-American war a Tagalog Insurgency because the Philippine troops commenced surrendering to the U.S army. The war commenced on February 4th, 1899, lasting until July 2nd, 1902. The war was a struggle for independence, which had early begun in 1896 under the Philippine Revolution, and the U.S regarded it as an insurrection. The conflict started when the Republic of the Philippines commenced first opposed the Paris treaty under which the U.S. took possession of the Philippines from the country of Spain. During the war, more than two hundred thousand Filipino civilians died due to both disease and famine. Meshack, my high school friend, died on April, 22nd 1899, due to the gunfire that emanated from the fight between the Philippian and the American soldiers in the city of Manila. Overall, the total number of deaths is estimated to be one million.
