The Realities of Domestic Violence and Its Impact on Our Society

Importance of the Topic

When presented with the dilemma of what research topic to choose, I tried to look at the most important problems that limit the well-being of the global society. The topic of domestic violence was chosen not only for its relevance but also because of the hope to shed light on the adverse influence that the issue has on people (Nealon-Woods, 2015). Despite the fact that devoted eight weeks to the topic, it is still interesting to me. Moreover, I feel that more can be done in terms of research because the problem is very wide and affects millions of people worldwide. Regarding further areas of research, I would have liked to look at the discrepancy in domestic abuse reporting between men and women. While statistically, women become victims of domestic violence more often than men, it could have been interesting to determine whether men report such incidences less due to the fear of being judged or mocked (“Men can be victims of abuse, too,” 2014).

Development of Research Skills

When researching the topic, I had to use a variety of skills to ensure that the search, analysis, and results will be as effective as possible. Thus, it was imperative to identify preliminary research questions in order to filter through relevant and irrelevant information about domestic violence since there is an over-abundance of data on this topic. The most important takeaway learned in regard to research strategies is ensuring that bias does not come into play when seeking out information. I tried to include findings of research from different perspectives.

Incorporation of Changes

Taking into account peer feedback is an essential step toward providing a well-researched and well-written paper. Based on the feedback from my peers, I have incorporated several changes. First, I improved the organization of the paper and provided clear designations for chapters to ensure a balanced flow of information. Second, I worked on the conclusion for the paper to include more recommendations such as introducing media campaigns to raise awareness of the issue or attracting the attention of financial supporters in order to sustain the practice of physical and mental health specialists. The reason for these changes was to improve the presentation of the research paper and to make sure that readers are interested in what I have found about the problem of domestic violence.

Reviewing Classmates’ Work

Reading the work of my classmates was a beneficial aspect of my research experience because it gave me confidence as to write my own research paper. I saw that everyone was engaged in his or her study and while their works could not be called perfect, they reflected different points of view, which is refreshing. I also understood that in research, there is no unified point of view regarding a specific topic because multiple people have different approaches and practices when it comes to conducting research.

Improvement of Writing

Lastly, I would like to commend the improvement of my writing strategies based on the review of work done by my classmates. Admittedly, I have struggled with my writing in terms of the logical presentation and the layout of the material. I have found it challenging to compose a cohesive research paper based on the abundance of data that I have found. After reading some of my classmates’ papers, I found inspiration in presenting my work in a way that would be interesting and not just scientific. Because the problem of domestic violence is extremely relevant today, I find it important to present information about it eloquently and effectively.
