The Undeniable Importance of Accountability

Personal responsibility, compliance, and awareness play an essential role in any human activity. A responsible attitude has always been highly valued since it means making conscious decisions and applying behaviors that provide trustful and sincere communication. Except for the ability to communicate, the ability to respect colleagues is also a crucial element for both career and personal growth. When it comes to the workflow, responsibility also means legal, financial, moral, and conscientious accountability. Certainly, different areas of activity require diverse levels of accountability both for the work itself and for coworkers. Thus, much more consequences depend on the behavior and attitude of a doctor than of an ordinary office employee. This paper will address the question of how a person’s accountability affects activities in the military and medical environment.

In all countries’ armies, even before our era, subordination and the need to obey the same rules have existed. They subsist to support order and security in the state as their importance significantly increases when it comes to sovereignty and independence. Army ideology is based mainly on communal discipline, which, in turn, is formed by each soldier in particular. The principle of collective accountability has been actively used for a long time and shows good results in achieving the goals stated. In the army, a demonstrative example is group training. If at least one of the soldiers is guilty of being late, all others will also be equally punished. On the one hand, the perpetrator must realize his responsibility for personal actions. On the other hand, the penalized collective will influence the soldier, forcing him to comply with the rules of army regulations. Consequently, a double psychological influence is exerted, which permits achieving results faster and more effectively. Since the army aims to protect the country and its citizens, it justifiably requires a commitment to duty and diligence from soldiers, as any of them is responsible for the common purpose.

The situation is similar in medicine since a human life is at stake. Violation of conventional norms usually brings the negative personal experiences of a medical worker and the condemnation of his colleagues and society. Moral responsibility is fundamental in the medical field. The ethics of relationships between doctors, as well as other representatives of the medical profession of various specialties, does not have some specific features, it is essentially the same for any profile of medical workers. Healthy interactions between team members, an atmosphere of goodwill and true partnership are necessary conditions for discipline and well-coordinated fruitful work. It is inappropriate and unacceptable to subject the colleagues to additional workload, especially if it does not concern their competence. Further subversive contact between doctors and quarrels among medical professionals adversely affect the work of the hospital, causing poor performance and worsened patient service. That is why it is vital to maintain a respectful attitude toward the work of others. Medicine always faces a high load on its employees, and only mutual accountability and engagement help to overcome difficulties and achieve a harmonious and effective result.

The concept of social and moral accountability is related to any profession. If a worker is legally responsible for an act that violated a particular rule or law, then his moral responsibility comes when he violates moral norms and the principles based on them. In its manifestations, moral accountability is closely related to the reprobation of the violator. The perpetrator is a subject to external condemnation, but he is expected to decry the committed act himself. The presence of negative emotions of self-esteem, such as guilt and shame, is considered as a sign of the authenticity of self-judgment. In this case, these emotions represent regulating and training mechanism for the employee. It is assumed that under the influence of such impressions, the worker can reinterpret his conclusions and actions that have affected the work of the company and his colleagues in particular. This mechanism ensures the mutual influence of the individual and the collective. It also promotes accountability as a foundational factor in any productive activity.

To sum up, it should be noted that the military and medical fields require a high level of responsibility more than others. In peacetime, a soldier is accountable for discipline in his unit, which may seem negligible, but plays a crucial role when the country needs protection. Medical carelessness and shifting responsibilities to colleagues can negatively affect patients’ condition and even cost someone his life. Accountability is one of the main personality traits necessary for sufficient work and achievement of results, whether it is an orderly training session or coordinated and competent actions of medical professionals in a hospital department. The ability to properly interact in a team gives a person a significant advantage in achieving success and goals. Thus, responsibility is both a public and a personal asset. The impact of a soldier or doctor contributes to achieving the common welfare, and the final result achievement gives them a sense of satisfaction and joy. This feature makes accountability a valuable and wholesome trait.
