This is due to the fact that it can provide an understanding of communication methods and approaches that can interest and engage the listener to achieve the most significant effectiveness. When researching this topic, Winston Churchill’s speech “Their finest hour,” in which the leader addresses the House of Commons of the Parliament of the United Kingdom, can be noted. More precisely, the various communication theories, skills, and approaches used to reach the listeners are of interest.
First of all, it is necessary to gain an understanding of what was the central message of “Their finest hour.” Hence, Winston Churchill, in his speech, draws attention to the events taking place at that time in France, on the territory of which enemy German troops plunged (Winston Churchill Speeches, n.d.). In addition, he points out that the events affecting the country require joint efforts to achieve victory. Thus, Winston Churchill prepared the Nation for resistance to confront the Nazis.
The main element that especially plays a role in the success of Churchill’s speech is a direct appeal not only to the House of Commons but also to the entire population of the country. Therefore, one of the main motivating phrases becomes, “Let us, therefore, brace ourselves for our duties” (Winston Churchill Speeches, n.d.). With this expression, the speaker focuses on the need for joint efforts in the fight against a common enemy. Moreover, due to the direct appeal to the people, the author gives credibility to his words. He also focuses on the uncertainty of how long a struggle that has arisen in the world may take, but this does not cause fear or bewilderment. On the contrary, when listening to Churchill’s speech, there is a feeling of deep patriotism and companionship, which was so necessary in difficult war times.
It can be said that within the framework of this speech, the theory of communication theory of reasoned action was applied. Thus, this approach is considered as “behaviors can be influenced by influencing a person’s intentions” (“Communication theories,” para. 27). Churchill, in his speech, makes an attempt to appeal to the civil and voluntary intentions of people to support other countries and help in military operations. Another way that is used to achieve the most remarkable effectiveness of the speaker’s words that Churchill implements is saying that he shares the opinion of the majority on the need to fight the enemy. Thus, he brings himself closer to people, giving them the opportunity to believe in their strength and understand that power is on their side.
In conclusion, the speech that is delivered to the people must include specific components to achieve the desired effect. A great example is Winston Churchill’s speech entitled “Their finest hour.” Hence, the speaker uses the theory of reasoned action, which focuses on forming the right intentions of the population regarding the need to fight the German army. In addition to addressing the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, he appeals to the people, encouraging them to take decisive and fearless actions and raising the sense of companionship of nations. Another critical skill of Churchill is equating himself with the people and indicating that he shares their point of view regarding the need to defeat the enemy.
