Trends in Contemporary British Society

Introduction

Contemporary British society is considered to be the result of major changes in the spheres of politics, economics and private issues of the population. To understand the modern situation and position of the society of the UK it is necessary to underline the basic changes experienced by the population in the sphere of family life and business. Statistics provided are related to the family position in British society and the level of employment within the country.

The analysis of social trends gives an opportunity to draw a kind of portrait of UK society. Such aspect of social life as family formation has undergone significant changes connected with the baby boom and marriage level within the British population. In most cases, women have children at the age of their twenties. According to the statistics, the number of births outweighs the number of deaths points. Favorable living standards stimulated an increase in the level of family formation. (Jackson, 1998) The basic factors for the couples concerned ideological, economic and social issues influencing the decision making as to baby birth or adoption.

It is important to stress that difficulties touched parents of disabled children. In most cases, gender assumptions and ideological aspects caused difficulties as formal support was obtained. Recently there have been organizing various programs in the UK aimed at stimulating employers to provide crucial support for such parents. Thus, family trends in Great Britain closely interact with the level of employment of its population. (Abercrombie & Warde, 2000)

Over the last 25 years, changes in the work trend in the UK have been considerable. Taking into account statistical data United Kingdom is recognized as the country with the highest rate of employment. In 2002 the number of people suffering unemployment concerned the category of disabled people; about 9 % of them were jobless.

Over the last ten years, the number of employees has rapidly increased by 30%. Most part of the population is busy with full-time jobs, though the quantity of part-time workers has also increased. The level of employment is taken in accordance with the EU statistics and one should stress that Great Britain takes first place after Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands. (Social Trends: A Portrait of British Society, 2003)

Conclusion

Thus, as a matter of conclusion, one should underline the fact that the living standard of the UK is considered to be on the upper level. The rate of employment is high enough to be predetermined by favorable economical, political and cultural development. The family rate is constantly increasing. The problems concern disabled people; though there is a number of programs aimed to help this part of the population, it is necessary to note that government should develop various campaigns and organize international meetings for the purpose of problem regulation.
